Historic Donner Pass Summit ⛰️ Pacific Crest Trail crossing

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The old Hwy 40 passed through this summmit at 7135 ft elevation, still today the Donner Pass Road. Fast and heavy traffic of course goes over the I-80 interstate freeway a couple of miles north.
Also the site of German BierGarten Restaurant "Summit Haus" open from mid June to Labor Day (early September) 11am-4pm, part of Sugar Bowl Resort

Surprisingly, Donner Peak is not the highest peak in the area, it's just a little knob across this short saddle about 200 yards to the east. It offers about the same view of Donner Lake and Castle Peak as from here, albeit through a cool split rock. One can continue along the PCT which becomes more or less level with the contours from this saddle, or continue to climb to Mt Judah summit.

Shelter mostly meant for winter accomodation, but can also be useful in other seasons. Public emergency and day use free, overnight stays need reservation via the Sierra Club at Claire Tappaan Lodge in Norden, Donner Pass. $25 plus 10% tax. If unplanned stay was needed and space was available, send payment right afterwards. 6 bunks downstairs and wood floor upstairs, bring mattress/sleeping bag. No water. In winter snow can be melted on the wood stove. Fire wood is in fuel room on right side inside the hut.

Table with benches, wood stove and firewood, kitchen without any water but pots to melt snow on stove. Outhouse toilet 20 yards west of the hut. Reservation via Clair Tappaan Lodge (25$ +10% tax per person per night). Can be used as a daytime and emergency shelter by the public.
