The original structure, built between 1907 and 1911, consisted of two railway bridges and one road bridge. After 1945, only the two railway bridges were rebuilt, later supplemented by a third on the north side. Pedestrian and cycle paths were added to the outer railway bridges to replace the missing road bridge.

The North Gate is the only one of the four larger, more elaborately designed gatehouses in the Roman city wall of which architectural remains have survived. The other three were located on today's Weyerstraße, near St. Aposteln, and at the Hohe Pforte. Only the remains of their foundations remain. In this respect, the North Gate provides an impression of the design of these main entrances to the city, which led to the major overland roads to Bonn, towards Luxembourg, towards Maastricht, and to Neuss. Description The North Gate was originally a three-arched structure. The road leading north to Novaesium/Neuss ran through the center, and the side passages were intended for pedestrians. The arch spanning the road was reconstructed and is on display in the Roman-Germanic Museum. The letters CCAA (Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium) are carved into the land side. ``` The gates were framed by fluted pilasters, of which the base and lower part of the shaft are still preserved in the preserved side passage. The arched structure was flanked by two square towers. The entire structure was approximately 30 meters wide and 11.6 meters deep. The central passage was 5.6 meters wide, and the side passages 1.9 meters wide. In the reconstructed part of the gate on the cathedral platform, a groove can be seen on the west side in which the portcullis of the central passage ran. This portcullis proves that the gate had two floors, although its exact construction is unknown. The façade of the upper floor may have been divided by eight small arches. Dating Excavations carried out on the Rhine-facing section of the city wall during the construction of the Cologne subway show that the wall was built there in the 1890s. The three other sides of the city wall, including the north gate, were built either at the same time or shortly before. Source: https://www.kuladig.de/Objektansicht/O-90273-20140408-3
