On May 8, 1997, the then Federal President Roman Herzog was awarded the International Charlemagne Prize in Aachen as a special honor. In his acceptance speech, he said: “For a thousand years, the question of our continent’s destiny has been whether it will live in unity or in division… I already said it on May 8, 1995, commemorating the end of the Second World War, and I want to repeat it here in essence: … What unites us Europeans first and foremost is our shared European culture, including our political culture, which is a culture of freedom… It is the roof under which we all live. More than once, the wars we have waged against each other have shaken this roof… Today, we have a unique opportunity to strengthen this roof—the intellectual superstructure of Europe—and to place it on a solid foundation of political unity and economic progress… We want to live together peacefully and with mutual respect with the other regions of the world. But we also want to preserve our own convictions and ways of life. For this, we need a united Europe.” (Roman Herzog)

I was there for the Heritage Open Day. And they're a really nice group, working very hard to make the church beautiful again so it can continue to be used as a village, community center, and church. I ask everyone who drives past to please donate something. Because they truly deserve it. They really work hard for their village. And you just have to appreciate that!
