October 25, 2023, Devil's Canyon

Oak Flat Campground is a little off the beaten path. It's off of the Gila-Pinal Scenic Route, and it's a popular spot for OHV enthusiasts, but the OHV trails and roads are also great for mountain biking and hiking. There are a bunch of canyons in the area that can be fun to explore on foot, but if you decide to go for a hike, make sure to take a map with you since the trails and roads aren't marked super well. Once you work your way south away from the campground, you start to get into the Devil's Canyon territory. The canyons back here are vast, primitive, and worth the trek to get back there.

Old US 60 is a double-track dirt path that is part of the Legends of Superior Trails (L.O.S.T.) network of trails. It follows along with the current Highway 60 and passes over some canyons and ravines as it works its way up towards Signal Mountain.

The cabin ruins were property of William Toney, in 1915 it was his homestead. The Superstition Area Land Trust (SALT) purchased this area to protect this important historical site and help protect the animals and environment in the area.

Oak Flat is a highly sacred site for the Apache Nation. The latter are currently fighting for years against the extension of copper mines which would irreparably destroy this spiritual and natural site of the utmost importance. Oak Flat is a very nice state park where you'll find a nice riverside campsite. Many shaded places are scattered everywhere. One or two wickiups (traditional Apache dwellings) are found on the site. You can also make beautiful hikes in the surroundings. For more information about this fight and this site see the following web page: http://apache-stronghold.com/
