The Dead River gets its name from that fact that in some parts it barely moves. These parts allow kayaks and canoes to navigate without too much difficulty.

Poplar Hut is part of the Maine Huts &Trails network of huts located in the state. The hut is one of the most popular to hike to as a day hike, being a short 3-mile uphill walk from the trailhead located near the airport. Accommodation is available, but it must be booked ahead of time. There is also a small cafe which makes it a great resting spot for a day out on the trails.
