Pretty little church with a lovingly landscaped cemetery

The sculpture was created in collaboration with the sculptor Erik Heide, the restaurateur Hans Beck Thomsen, the Henne Strand Handelsstandsforening, the Grundjerforeningen Henne Strand, Niels Kristian Hansen (also known as Købmand Hansen) and the municipality of Varde. The approximate price is 500,000 DKK. Hans Beck Thomsen, born and raised in Henne, is a trained chef and became famous when he bought Henne Kirkeby Kro from his mother in 1981 and, together with his wife Kirsten, transformed the village pub into an international restaurant. In 2007 he sold the pub and has been running the Brasserie Cafe Stranden in Henne ever since. Hans Beck Thomsen is an initiated sculpture. Not only is it a beautiful work of art, but it also represents a symbol of freedom, strength and the ability to make it through - for the people of the West Coast, but especially for his mother Katrine.

Henne Church is the oldest church in the area. The oldest parts date from the second half of the 12th century and were probably built under Elias, Bishop of Ribe, who is mentioned in 1145 as the owner of nearby Hennegård. Already around 1300 the choir and the nave were extended. The vestibule of the church and the tower were added in the 15th century. A valuable early Gothic Crucifixion group from around 1250 hangs on the north wall of the chancel. The altar consists of a late Gothic three-winged carved shrine and dates from around 1500. It was modernized between 1600 and 1620 and placed in a Renaissance structure with four columns and a top. There were also two side altars for Mary with the child and for St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the church, whose sculptures can still be seen today. The early Renaissance pulpit was donated in 1573 by Hartvig Staverskov, Hennegård. The state gallery with bay window from 1776 is decorated with pictures of the apostles. www.hennestrand.de/erlebnisse/kirchen

The Möwe Katrine is made of sandblasted, weather-resistant aluminium. It weighs 250 kilos and stands on a 5.5 ton granite column. This was cemented into the ground with two tons of concrete so that there was no danger of the seagull soaring into the air at the parking lot in Henne Strand - although it is a symbol of freedom. https://ugeavisen.dk/turistavisen-en/article/new-sculpture-now-spreads-katrine-in-the-west-wind-her-wings
