July 18, 2024, Cerbat Road Junction

From here you can take Cerbat Road further into the Cerbat Mountains, and stop at the Cerbat Ghost Town. There isn't much left of the once thriving mining town, but it's worth a visit if you have an interest in ghost towns. As for the name, Cerbat is derived from a local Hualapai or Wallapai word for bighorn sheep.

Chloride was founded in 1862 with the discovery of silver ore. During its peak, there were more than 75 mines in operation, and the population reached 2,000 in 1920. Today, there are still a few mines in operation, but population is down to around 270. The Chloride Historical Society maintains several old buildings including the Old Jail and the Playhouse. Every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month mock gunfights are held at Cyanide Springs. There are gunfights every Saturday at "High Noon". The 1st and 3rd Saturday the gunfight troupe is the High Desert Drifters, the 2nd and 4th Saturday the Frontiersmen perform. More details here: visitchlorideaz.com/historicalsociety

If you are a lover of fine spirits, then a visit to the Desert Diamond Distillery is a must. It is the home of the Gold Miner Spirit brand Rums & Whiskey’s. You might want to attend a distillery tour for $7 or go straight to whisky....sorry, whiskey tasting. desertdiamonddistillery.com

There's not many better ways to cool down in the desert than to enjoy a nice cold beer. Here at Edge Of The World Brewery & Pub you can do that as well as fill up on their excellent pizza, giant pretzels, chicken wings, salads, and desserts. The pub is also host to a number of events and its setting, just outside of Zion National Park, means you'll have amazing views while you sip your brews.

This campground on the fringe of Zion National Park is a great place to stay. The views are incredible and the accommodations are top notch. You have a choice between bell tents and covered wagons for your stay, and they are fitted out with A/C to help beat the desert heat. The staff is very friendly and full of tips for your adventures around Zion.

July 17, 2024, SARA Park

The SARA in SARA Park is short for, Special Activities and Recreation Area, and it definitely lives up to its name. In addition to the usual hiking and biking trails you might expect, you'll also find BMX and motocross tracks, an RC airplane and helicopter field, rodeo grounds, shooting & archery ranges, baseball & soccer fields, an RC car race track, an actual racetrack (Havasu 95 Speedway), and a dog park. And if that's not enough, the city has already approved plans to expand the park to offer even more space for different activities. Needless to say, there's something for everyone here.

Cattail Cove offers visitors the chance to swim, hike, camp, or launch a boat. The park can get booked up far in advance, so if you plan on staying overnight be sure to secure your site early.

No you aren't on Arrakis, but you would be forgiven for thinking you've stumbled upon the source of "spice" here on Earth. Instead of dodging sand worms you can rent a sandboard and glide down the dunes. You can also stay at the campground or hike out on to the dunes as far as you dare.
