Gaasterland is a wooded area where foxglove, wood anemone, collared anemone, and wild garlic bloom profusely in spring. A special sight is the sand martin, which breeds here in colonies in self-dug cavities in sandy banks.

The 18th-century spider mill near Nijhuizum, also known as the Monnikenburenmolen (Monks' Mill), is notable for its unique thatched lower tower. Until 1935, it was powered by wind, after which it was diesel-powered. Thanks to restoration, the mill has been preserved and designated as a national monument and a reserve pumping station. Volunteer millers keep it running; it can often be visited on Saturdays.

One of the most beautiful cycle paths through Sudwest-Fryslân. On the (racing) bike watch out for oncoming traffic and walkers because of the narrow path. Bird-rich area.

The Ankertsjerke (Anchorage) is located in the center of the originally medieval riverside village of Oudega. Surrounded by a small, fenced churchyard, it stands exactly on the northwest axis along which the village grew. Lush climbing plants wrap the south gable in a thick green blanket.

This 18th-century spinner mill is known as both Nijhuizumermolen and Monkburenmolen. The thatched lower tower is unique for a spinner head mill. The mill was used as a windmill until about 1935. A diesel engine was then installed. The mill is now run by volunteer millers and can usually be visited on Saturdays. When the mill is running you are welcome to take a look in and around the mill.

The lower tower of this mill dates from the 18th century. The mill was equipped with a ship's wheel at the .bouw. The paddle wheel was later replaced by a Viizel. The mill was used as a windmill until about 1935. After that, a diesel engine was installed to power the Vizel. The upper house and the wick cross have been removed. In 2003 the mill was transferred from the Water Board to the Mill Foundation. The thatched lower tower is unique for a spinner head mill. Completely restored in 2008 and since then the mill has been run by willing millers.
