Just outside Elst there is a farm where many old cars and other things from back to the 60s are in the garden

A really great area in this park; donkeys, petting zoo, water playground, vegetable garden, maze, gnomes, and lots more fun. Also a great place for lunch; the restaurant is open until 6 p.m.

Beneath the St. Martin's Church, also called the Grote, covered by a concrete floor, lie the foundations of two Romanesque temples and pre-Romanesque churches. For this reason, since 1970 it has been classified as a National Monument, the most important Roman monument in the Netherlands.

Before our optimism is dashed, the management has a change of heart. Shortly before 4 p.m., the weather finally clears up (as forecast), and we gradually dry off a little. Then the reconciliation with the somewhat bitter first few hours begins, with an almost visually princely entry into Elst on a perfectly straight cycle path. A traveling fishmonger supplies us with delicious kibbeling, which we hungrily consume on a central bench under the Werenfriduskerk church in the sunshine. A final storm passes unexpectedly over us, but not without briefly rehydrating us as we leave Elst through the Burgemeeste Galamapark and along residential streets, before tackling one of the grueling stretches of trail that are unavoidable on such a long-distance hike.
