Hermann Hesse died on August 9, 1962, in his house in Montagnola from the consequences of a stroke. Two days later, he was buried in the Sant'Abbondio cemetery in the closest circle of family and friends. His gravestone was designed by the Swiss sculptor Hans Jakob Meyer. It consists of a simple natural stone and bears only the names Hermann Hesse (1877–1962) and his wife Ninon Hesse (1895–1966). The modesty of the grave corresponds to Hesse's way of life and his desire for seclusion. The Sant'Abbondio cemetery in Gentilino is one of the quietest and most impressive literary memorial sites in Europe. It is only a few minutes' walk from Montagnola, where Hermann Hesse lived from 1919 until his death. The small cemetery belongs to the Romanesque church of Sant'Abbondio, whose origins date back to the 11th century.

Casa Camuzzi, a fairytale palazzo Casa Camuzzi was built in 1853 by the Ticinese architect Agostino Camuzzi, who had worked on the expansion of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, among other projects. The building looks like a small castle: a playful palazzo with baroque and neo-Gothic elements, reminiscent of a Russian country estate. It is surrounded by a lush, terraced park with palm trees, cedars, chestnut trees, magnolias, eucalyptus, and wisteria. Casa Camuzzi is probably the most important place in Hermann Hesse's life. Although he "only" lived there for twelve years – from 1919 to 1931 – some of his most significant works were created during this time. Hesse himself later described these years as the most intense and productive period of his life.

Ancient Church of other historical value, with paintings by G. Petrini (1667-1759). The Church visible today is the result of the restorations completed in 1998.

Fantastic location in the traffic-calmed center of Montagnola. You should allow yourself 1 - 2 hours (including a 30-minute video) to see his work and his life. In the immediate vicinity, the literature cafe Boccadero invites you to stop.

The house and the whole village are simply worth seeing in contrast to the hustle and bustle down in the city of Lugano.
