June 20, 2024, Slant Walk

Slant Walk, an iconic pathway at Miami University, has been a central feature of the campus since its earliest days. Originally known as the Slanting Path, it evolved from a simple dirt track to its current paved form. The walk serves as a primary route connecting the heart of campus to Uptown Oxford. Over the years, it has seen various improvements, including sand surfacing, brick pavers, and cement. Notable features along its history include iron post gateways, the 1909 Centennial Gate, and the current Williamsburg-style Phi Delt Gates. As the campus expanded, so did Slant Walk, extending to include newer buildings like Alumni Library, Irvin Hall, Sesquicentennial Chapel, and Shriver Center.

A nice little amenity along the path, on the Brookeville side, is this pollinator's garden.

Following the gravel path there is an area around the 1.0 mile marker or so (near the feeder dam) where the gravel path becomes ill-maintained and is overgrown, so I rode up onto the road for maybe 1/4 mile before resuming the path.

I think most shops close at 5:00(ish). There are also public restrooms marked they close at 5, in the town of Metamora

Located on the outer loop of the Shaker Trace Trail, these protected wetlands are a haven for bird watchers. Blue Herons are often seen hunting for fish. The area is also amazing for seeing Monarch butterflies in the late summertime.

This beautiful lake is a great place to go swimming, or to rent a canoe or paddleboat and explore further around the area. At the far end of the lake, there is a massive lily pad garden, and I would highly recommend that if you do rent a boat that you make your way down there!

The disc golf course at Miami Whitewater Forest is a 9 hole course with a mixture of forest and open fairways. If you have never tried disc golf before, you can rent some discs from the visitors center and give it a go, I highly recommend it.

Located at around the halfway mark of the Shaker Trace Outer Loop Trail, this picnic area is a fantastic place to stop for a rest or to have a picnic. The picnic overlooks the nature preserve area and the wildflower meadows.
