This spacious bothy is a lovely place for a break (for lunch) or an overnight stay. The view of felled forest slopes is a bit depressing, but inside you can cozy up by the fire. More info: www.mountainbothies.org.uk/bothies/southern-scotland/over-phawhope/ Be kind: after your stay, please make a donation to the caretaker. Burleywhag has two main rooms, one is currently being reconstructed by the MBA (September 2025). The main room has a multi fuel stove, and a sleeping annex (sleeps 4 comfortably). Walk in from Mitchellslacks is around 1 hour (5km) on good paths. There is a well constructed bridge outside Burleywhag, which stood up well to Storm Amy, but the water was coming over the top when the river was in spate. As always with bothies, leave them as you find them. Tidy up and respect the space and don’t leave rubbish. If you are using a bothy, consider becoming a member of the MBA or donating. https://www.mountainbothies.org.uk/

The bench is no longer there. There was a swallows nest in the room to left of door so try not to disturb it. Beautiful views from it and neighbouring burn

I’ve seen this bothy on YouTube via:#thehappyhippie & a few others & although I won’t be lucky enough to visit myself my adventurous seester just might so would like some more info. I’ve seen some, what one hiker called, “poltergeist” activity caught on video. Strange activity has been reported ranging from: anxious feelings overnight caused by noises that make the visitor feel like someone else might be arriving all the way up to furniture actually moving on its own but it seems like the level of activity you get depends on the weather &/or your beliefs since the people hearing noises didn’t really claim to be “believers” but the ones who saw furniture moving most definitely were + there was a furious storm raging outside making it an even harder choice for leaving & getting soaked or staying & getting scared, lol. Not trying to poke fun or anything but should me seester decide to explore that area again I’m pretty sure it’s something she’d be interested in so would like some more info about the shepherd who built it or if perhaps there’s any “local” type of story that might give a potential reason for the things people have actually caught on camera?!? Regardless I’d like to thank everyone for sharing whatever you can since this is how we, as siblings, tend to spend time together… I do the research and she enjoys the travel & if you knew us growing up you’d have thought it be the other way around but life doesn’t always go as you’d hoped but I will say this much, as both of us are avid believers in the idea that just because it’s unexplainable doesn’t make it impossible & paranormal is possible because in this life we’ve learned one thing for certain & that is that at the end of the day… “stranger things have happened!” Thanks again for sharing & remember: Bsmart+Bsafe=Bhappy!! TTFN ✌🏼

Here we stand for a week at this nice cottage. It's nature pure. The landlord is very helpful. He is speaking perfect German. He drove with his classic mercedes jeep with us on top of the hills. A beautiful view. Children will love his dog- a golden retriever. 🥰

2024 update: There's no windows or doors, but there's a roof that looks pretty solid. Use at your own risk, of course 🙏

South Scotland offers a diverse range of outdoor accommodation. You'll find basic, remote bothies providing essential shelter for hikers and cyclists, as well as more luxurious glamping options and shepherd's huts with modern amenities. Bothies are typically simple, primitive structures, while glamping huts offer comfort and unique experiences.
Bothies are basic, primitive shelters found in remote countrysides, open to the public for temporary use. They are ideal for those seeking a back-to-basics experience. Notable bothies in South Scotland include Auchope Mountain Refuge Hut and Yearning Saddle Refuge Hut, both on the Pennine Way. Other examples are Culsharg Bothy in Galloway Forest Park, White Laggan Bothy on the Southern Upland Way, and Brattleburn Bothy in the Lowther Hills.
Yes, for those seeking more comfort, South Scotland features a variety of glamping and shepherd's huts. These often combine rustic charm with modern conveniences. Examples include luxurious, hand-built shepherd's huts like those at Lochside Shepherds Huts & Holiday Cottages, which offer private hot tubs, and the unique Roulotte Retreat with its gypsy-style caravans and eco hot tubs.
While many bothies are basic, some glamping options are well-suited for families. For example, Hearthstanes Steading is categorized as family-friendly. When choosing, look for huts with more amenities or those located near family-oriented activities.
The region around the huts offers excellent opportunities for various outdoor activities. You can enjoy mountain hikes, with routes like 'The Cheviot – Hedgehope Hill loop' or 'Merrick – Benyellary loop'. Cycling is also popular, with options such as the 'St Mary's Loch & Megget Water loop'. For mountain biking enthusiasts, there are trails like those at Glentress Trail Centre. You can find more details on these activities in the Mountain Hikes, Cycling, and MTB Trails guides for South Scotland.
Many huts, especially bothies, are strategically located along popular long-distance hiking trails. For instance, Auchope Mountain Refuge Hut and Yearning Saddle Refuge Hut are on the Pennine Way, while Over Phawhope Bothy and Brattleburn Bothy are useful stops on the Southern Upland Way. These locations provide direct access to extensive walking routes.
The Southern Uplands offer a generally gentler bothying experience compared to the Highlands, with more predictable weather. While bothies are open year-round, spring and autumn provide pleasant temperatures for hiking and fewer midges than summer. Winter visits can be rewarding for a rugged experience, especially with bothies featuring wood-burning stoves, but require careful preparation for colder conditions.
Bothies, maintained by organizations like the Mountain Bothy Association (MBA), are generally open to the public and do not require booking; they operate on a first-come, first-served basis. For glamping huts and shepherd's huts, booking in advance is typically required, especially during peak seasons. It's best to check the specific accommodation provider's website for booking procedures.
While many bothies are remote, some are relatively closer to roads or have more accessible parking. For example, Culsharg Bothy is noted as being quite close to a road. Glamping and shepherd's huts generally offer easier access and dedicated parking facilities, as they cater to a more comfortable stay.
Over Phawhope Bothy is thought to have been the home of William Laidlaw, a famous Scottish poet, and his wife Bessie Scott in the early 18th century. White Laggan Bothy is an 18th-century cottage, adding to its historical charm.
For bothies, essential packing includes a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, food, water, a headlamp, and a first-aid kit. If the bothy has a stove, consider bringing fuel and kindling. Always pack out everything you pack in. For glamping huts, check with the provider, but generally, you'll need personal items, food, and appropriate clothing for outdoor activities.
Yes, many huts are situated in scenic natural environments, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting. The Galloway Forest Park, where Culsharg Bothy is located, is known for its dark skies and diverse wildlife. Areas around Loch Ken, where Ecobothies are found, are also rich in nature, including birds like ospreys.
Bothies are typically in remote locations, so amenities like pubs are usually not nearby. However, some glamping huts or shepherd's huts might be closer to villages or towns where you can find pubs and other services. For example, the Three Little Huts are near Gatehouse of Fleet, offering access to local towns and villages.
