The city wall can be walked all the way around the city and offers interesting views. You can see the churches, down to the Bogside, the main street with the bunkered court, and the beautiful Guildhall. You can also see the curbs of the different districts, which are colored according to their affiliation. While the scenery seemed a bit threatening on our first visit in the 1990s, this seems to have given way to a peaceful openness, the architectural expression of which has become the beautiful, curved, connecting Peace Bridge.

Yes, the area is very family-friendly. Prehen Wood is an excellent choice, offering two easy circular trails (0.5 and 1 mile) on gentle grades. Kids will enjoy spotting the series of wooden animal sculptures, including a fox and a badger, that act as waymarkers along the paths.
Dog walking is popular in the area, especially in the local woodlands. Prehen Wood is a great spot for a walk with your dog, but please keep them under control to protect the sensitive ancient woodland habitat and its wildlife.
Hiking is possible year-round, but spring is particularly beautiful in the local woodlands. This is when the ground is carpeted with bluebells, wood anemone, and lesser celandine, creating a vibrant and colorful landscape.
Definitely. The region has over 20 easy-rated trails. For a simple but rewarding walk, the Derry Girls Mural – Guildhall Derry–Londonderry loop from Derry/Londonderry is a great option. It's under 4 miles and explores some of the city's famous landmarks on mostly flat terrain.

Ness Country Park, about 10 miles away, is a larger reserve known for its impressive waterfall and more extensive woodland paths along the Burntollet River, providing a slightly more rugged feel.
Prehen Wood is managed by the Woodland Trust and is generally open to the public 24/7, year-round. As it's an unlit woodland, it's best to plan your walks during daylight hours for safety and enjoyment.
The main entrance and starting point for the Prehen Wood trails is located on Prehen Road, near the junction with Sandringham Drive. There is limited on-street parking available in the vicinity. Another nearby option is the Red Brae Wood Car Park, which is highly rated by locals and provides access to paths in the area.
