Tongwell Lake

Highlight • Lake

Tongwell Lake seems to be Milton Keynes’ very own swan haven. The path around the lake is easy to follow as it only takes around 30 minutes to walk the whole way round. At times it’s not possible to see the lake through the reeds and bushes but in the openings you can enjoy some nice views of nature.

There’s a large island in the middle of the lake, so if you’re a birdwatcher we recommend bringing some binoculars to spot any birds over there.

Highlight • Structure

The motorway right besides is quite noise, which disturbs the experience considerably. Also the part closer to the national bowl is a bit shabby. For the rest quite green pseudo-nature, but relaxing by bike.

Loughton Valley Linear Park

Highlight • Historical Site

The floodplains of the River Ouse were protected when the modern town of Milton Keynes was built from the 1960s onwards. They formed the basis for a number of linear parks, of which Loughton Valley is one.

The result is a long and thin park that runs along almost the entire western side of the town centre. Bridleways and paths wind their way through the park and there are a number of lakes, woodland areas and even an extensively excavated Roman villa.
