On the way back, after Point 4, there is a large segment over private land. No access allowed. On the way back, the route goes over private land where walking is not allowed. We were turned back by the landowner and were not allowed to continue on his property (from point 4 to 5 on the route)! We had to walk about 6 km extra to get to the starting point (A)!

What are the parking options for hiking Slieve Gallion?

Parking is available at several points depending on your chosen trail. The main car park for ascents via Iniscarn Forest is located at the forest entrance. For walks around Lough Fea, there is a dedicated car park by the lake. It's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, as these spots can fill up.

Can I bring my dog on the trails around Brackagh Slieve Gallion?

Dogs are generally permitted on many trails, but they must be kept on a lead at all times. This is particularly important on Slieve Gallion due to grazing livestock on the open moorland and to protect ground-nesting birds. In Brackagh Bog Nature Reserve, keeping dogs on leads is essential to avoid disturbing the sensitive wildlife and habitats.

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks in the region?

The area offers excellent options for families. The Lough Fea loop is a very popular choice. It's a flat, easy walk of about 4 km around a scenic mountain lake, making it perfect for walkers of all ages and abilities.

What kind of wildlife might I see while hiking?

The region boasts diverse wildlife. On the slopes of Slieve Gallion, look for Irish hares, red grouse, and birds of prey like buzzards and sparrowhawks. The nearby Brackagh Bog Nature Reserve is a haven for insects, renowned for its dragonflies and butterflies, including the rare Irish damselfly and marsh fritillary.

What is the historical significance of Slieve Gallion?

Slieve Gallion has a rich history. Its summits are crowned with ancient burial cairns. The southern summit features a significant Neolithic passage tomb known as 'Calliagh Berra's House', which is one of the highest of its kind in the British Isles and dates back approximately 5,000 years.

What should I wear for a hike up Slieve Gallion?

Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential as the terrain can be uneven, steep, and boggy in places. The weather can change quickly on the mountain, so it's crucial to wear layered clothing and bring a waterproof jacket and trousers, even on a clear day. A hat and gloves are also recommended.

How difficult are the hikes up Slieve Gallion?

The difficulty varies. While there are easy lakeside paths, the main ascents to the summit of Slieve Gallion are considered moderate to challenging. They involve significant elevation gain on steep and uneven ground through open moorland, requiring a good level of fitness.

What makes Brackagh Bog Nature Reserve a special place to walk?

Brackagh Bog offers a unique walking experience through a rare wetland ecosystem. Centuries of turf cutting have created a mosaic of pools, peat ramparts, and diverse habitats. The traffic-free trails allow you to explore species-rich fens and woodlands, making it a peaceful and fascinating contrast to the mountain terrain.

What are the views like from the summit of Slieve Gallion?

The panoramic views from the top are a major highlight. On a clear day, you can see across the vast expanse of Lough Neagh to the southeast, the Mourne Mountains, and the surrounding Sperrin Mountains. The effort of the climb is well rewarded by these commanding vistas.

What do other hikers enjoy most about this area?
