The hiking car park is a good starting point for activities in one of the side valleys. From here you also have an ideal view of the “Three Sisters”. If you're driving through the magnificent Clencoe, stop here and take in the scenery.

Beautifully embedded lake in the valley. There is a parking lot right on the street, from where you can walk a few steps along the lakeshore.

The legendary inn serves good food all day long. Local game dishes, Scottish beef and Scottish salmon. But vegetarian dishes are also offered.

A subsiduary summit of the Bidean nam Bian, and part of the ridgeline leading down to Coire nan Lochan and the lost valley. The steep ridgelines and gullies in this area are a staple for Scottish Winter Mountaineering, as well as providing some great terrain for some wild mountain-running & hiking.

Bidean nam Bian is the highest of the peaks surrounding Glencoe. The mountain itself is built up of many complex summits and ridges - notably the summit of Stob Coire Sgreamhach, a Munro itself. At 1,150 metres, rocky summit and ridges provide committing, varied and technical mountain running, and a true mountain day out.

The main car park is located directly off the A82 road at Loch Achtriochtan itself. This is a very popular spot as it serves as the trailhead for many routes and offers immediate, stunning views of the loch and the Three Sisters of Glencoe. It can get busy, so arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends.
Yes, the An Torr loop — Glencoe National Nature Reserve is an excellent choice for families or those looking for a gentle walk. It's a short, relatively flat trail of about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) through woodland, making it accessible for most fitness levels.
Dogs are generally welcome on the trails, but it's important to keep them under control, especially near livestock. Some paths, like the one to Signal Rock, are on private land where leads are required. For more challenging mountain routes, ensure your dog has the stamina and experience for steep, rocky terrain.
For a moderately challenging circular route, consider the Stream on rocky slope – Loch Achtriochtan loop from Kentallen. This hike is around 6.2 miles (10 km) and offers a great mix of scenery without the extreme elevation gain of the high summits, making it a rewarding day out.
There is a wide variety of trails to explore, with over 180 routes available in the region. These range from short, easy lochside walks to demanding full-day mountain expeditions, offering options for every level of hiker.
The hiking routes around Loch Achtriochtan are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.5 stars. Hikers frequently praise the dramatic mountain scenery, the well-defined paths on popular routes, and the sheer wildness of the landscape.
Absolutely. The area is famous for its challenging ascents. A classic hard hike is the View of Stob Coire nan Lochan – Coire nan Lochan loop from Glen Coe. This is a demanding route with significant elevation gain that requires sure-footedness and good navigation skills, rewarding you with incredible views from the high corries.
The Three Sisters of Glencoe is a famously magnificent viewpoint. While the view from the main car parks along the A82 is iconic, many hiking trails offer unique perspectives. Hikes into the Lost Valley (Coire Gabhail) place you right between two of the 'sisters', providing a dramatic, immersive experience.
The weather in Glencoe can change very rapidly. Always pack waterproof trousers and a jacket, even if the forecast is good. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential. Also bring extra warm layers, a map and compass (and know how to use them), a fully charged phone, and plenty of food and water.
Summer (June to August) offers the longest daylight hours and the best chance of good weather. However, autumn (September to November) is also a spectacular time to visit, as the landscape turns to vibrant shades of orange and red. Winter hiking is only for experienced and properly equipped mountaineers due to snow, ice, and avalanche risk.
Yes, the Glencoe Lochan trails are a short drive from Loch Achtriochtan and offer a very different atmosphere. The trails there, such as the popular Glencoe Lochan Trail, wind through woodland around a serene lochan, providing a calmer and more sheltered walking experience compared to the exposed main glen.
