The church ruins date from the early 16th century but include stones from a much earlier pre 11th century church. After a new church was built, this one fell into disrepair, but the graveyard remains in use.

Here stands the remains of the once magnificent Drum Manor house. The house was built in the 1800s and was bought from the Forest Service in 1964 when it was turned into a park for the public. The park now features a campsite, hiking trails, gardens and a play park.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any family-friendly hikes in the Tullagh area?

Yes, the area is great for families. The walk to Glenevin Waterfall is a popular choice. It's a well-maintained 1km gravel path that follows a stream through a wooded valley, making it an easy and rewarding walk for all ages. The trail includes charming footbridges and picnic areas.

Which hike offers the best views around Tullagh?

For breathtaking panoramic views, the Binnion Hill walk is an excellent choice. The ascent leads to a summit with 360-degree vistas that take in the Urris Hills, Tullagh Bay, and even Malin Head on a clear day. It's a moderate challenge with a huge scenic payoff.

Can I find any circular or loop hikes near Tullagh?

Absolutely. The Drum Manor Forest Park loop is a pleasant circular route through woodland. For something more strenuous, the Butler's Glen Loop is a demanding but well-marked 10.5 km trail offering stunning coastal and countryside views.

Are dogs allowed on the trails?

Many trails in the region are suitable for walking with dogs, but local regulations can vary, especially on farmland where livestock may be present. It's always best to keep your dog on a lead. The Glenevin Waterfall walk, for instance, is often enjoyed by visitors with dogs, provided they are kept under control.

What is the walk to Glenevin Waterfall like?

The trail to Glenevin Waterfall is a gentle and scenic 10-15 minute walk along a riverside path. The trail is mostly level and well-maintained, leading through a lovely wooded area before arriving at the impressive 12-meter waterfall. It's a highly-regarded local spot, perfect for a short and beautiful outing.

Is parking available at the main trailheads?

Yes, parking is generally available at or near the most popular trailheads. For example, there is a car park for the Glenevin Waterfall walk and another near Clonmany village for those starting the Binnion Hill walk. However, these can get busy, especially on weekends, so arriving early is a good idea.

What's a good challenging hike for experienced walkers?

Experienced hikers looking for a challenge should consider the Butler's Glen Loop. This is a strenuous 10.5 km trail located between Clonmany and the Gap of Mamore. It's a well-marked route that rewards the effort with fantastic panoramic views of the rugged coastline and surrounding countryside.

Is it possible to walk along Tullagh Bay beach?

Yes, the long, sandy stretch of Tullagh Bay is perfect for a gentle walk. The horseshoe-shaped beach offers beautiful views and a relatively flat surface, making it ideal for a relaxing stroll. It's also a popular spot for horse riding and beach fishing.

What do other hikers say about the trails around Tullagh?

The hiking routes in this area are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Reviewers often praise the mix of coastal scenery, quiet forest paths, and rewarding hill climbs. The well-marked trails and stunning views are frequently mentioned as highlights.

What kind of gear is recommended for hiking in Tullagh?

Given the changeable Irish weather, waterproof clothing is essential, even if the day starts sunny. Sturdy walking boots are highly recommended, as some trails like the Urris Lakes Loop can be boggy in places. It's also wise to bring layers of clothing, water, and snacks, especially for longer hikes.

Are there any pubs or cafes near the hiking trails?

Yes, the nearby village of Clonmany has several pubs and places to eat, making it a convenient stop for a meal or a drink after your hike. It's a great place to relax and refuel after exploring trails like Binnion Hill or Butler's Glen.

How does the Glenevin Waterfall walk compare to a beach walk at Tullagh Bay?

They offer very different experiences. The Glenevin Waterfall walk is a sheltered, woodland trail along a stream, culminating at a dramatic waterfall. It's short and shaded. In contrast, the Tullagh Bay beach walk is an open, coastal experience on sand, with expansive views of the sea and sky. Both are relatively easy and showcase the diverse beauty of the area.
