The scenery is mountainous and panoramic, and the calm waters bring many anglers and are home to a number of fascinating bird species, often seen flitting along the lake. The walk is lovely and flat and features a children's play area, toilets, and plenty of rain shelters in case of unpredictable weather.

The church ruins date from the early 16th century but include stones from a much earlier pre 11th century church. After a new church was built, this one fell into disrepair, but the graveyard remains in use.

Yes, the area has several great options for families. Drum Manor Forest Park is particularly suitable, with well-maintained paths, gardens, and a picturesque lake. The Drum Manor House Ruins loop is an easy walk that is perfect for all abilities. Additionally, Pomeroy Forest Park features imaginative trails with sculptures that can make a walk more engaging for children.

Can I bring my dog on the trails around Gortreagh?

Many trails in the region are dog-friendly, but it's important to check the specific rules for each park. Gortin Glen Forest Park and The Fairy Glen are known to be popular spots for dog walkers. Always keep your dog under control, especially near wildlife or livestock, and be prepared to keep them on a lead where required.

What are the parking facilities like at the main trailheads?

Most of the main forest parks have dedicated parking areas. Davagh Forest has a couple of car parks, one with a playpark and another further up with picnic tables. Gortin Glen Forest Park is also well-equipped with parking. It's always a good idea to arrive early on weekends or holidays as these popular spots can get busy.

Are there any circular walks available?

Circular walks are very common in this area. The Lough Fea loop is a pleasant and relatively flat circular route around a scenic lake. Many of the waymarked trails within the forest parks, such as those in Davagh Forest and Drum Manor, are also designed as loops.

What kind of terrain should I expect on the hikes?

The terrain varies depending on where you hike. You'll find gentle, well-surfaced paths in managed areas like Drum Manor Forest Park. In contrast, routes in the Sperrin Mountains, such as the Slieve Gallion NE Top Summit loop, involve ascents on open moorland and can be boggy in places. Forest trails in places like Davagh may have a mix of gravel paths and earth tracks.

Are there any trails with historical significance?

Yes, the region is rich in history. The Derryloran Old Church loop takes you past historic church ruins. For something truly ancient, you can plan a hike in Davagh Forest, which is near the mysterious Beaghmore Stone Circles, a Bronze Age ceremonial site.

Where can I find the best scenic views?

For expansive views across the Sperrins, trails with some elevation gain are your best bet. The summit of Slieve Gallion offers wide-ranging panoramas of the surrounding landscape. Gortin Glen Forest Park is also highly regarded for its spectacular viewpoints looking out over the hills and valleys.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Gortreagh?

The trails in this area are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Hikers often praise the mix of serene forest walks, the beauty of the Sperrin Mountains, and the well-maintained paths in the various forest parks.

Are there any facilities like cafes or toilets at the trail locations?

The larger, more developed parks often have facilities. Gortin Glen Forest Park has a coffee shop and toilets, and An Creagan forest trail also has a cafe on site. Loughmacrory has a cafe hatch. For more remote trails, it's best to assume there will be no facilities and plan accordingly.

What is the best time of year to hike in Gortreagh?

Hiking is possible year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Spring and autumn provide vibrant colours in the deciduous woodlands of places like Drum Manor Forest Park. Summer offers longer daylight hours for exploring the Sperrins, while winter can be beautiful on a crisp, clear day, though you should be prepared for muddy and wet conditions.

Are there any unique natural features to see on the hikes?

The region has several unique features. Davagh Forest is noted for the Davagh Water, a river that sometimes has a reddish tint, and is also home to the OM Dark Sky Park and Observatory, one of the darkest sky locations in Ireland. The romantic ruins of the 19th-century manor house are a key feature within Drum Manor Forest Park.
