Near the town hall stands the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi. Built in 1499 from the ruins of an older church, it was partially demolished in 1615 due to its age and rebuilt around 1659 by a group of local artisans. The interior was decorated by artists who were very renowned in Sicily at the time. The church has two entrances: one via a west staircase that opens onto the town hall square, with an elegant 18th-century portal. The side entrance is on Via Donizetti. Lacking a bell tower, it has four bells rung with an automatic electronic system. It has a single nave and its interior, in late Baroque style, houses wooden statues from the 1700s (St. Michael the Archangel, a Crucifix, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Francis of Assisi) and several ancient paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries by famous artists. On the north side of the lake the path is barely visible. It's best to use the street from the parking lot. We circled the lake counterclockwise and with a dog. Due to poor routing, some gates had to be climbed over, difficult but doable

Also known as the Church of the Holy Father, this religious building, together with the adjoining "Regina Margherita" orphanage, formerly a convent, was built in Gela with a single nave and bell tower in 1738 by the PP. Minims of St. Francis of Paola. The facade of the church is characterized by an elegant portal in the late Baroque style dominated by the coat of arms of the religious order of the saint. Inside there are several statues and some eighteenth-century paintings. Adjacent and communicating with the church is the Regina Margherita di Gela Orphanage, an eighteenth-century building with a large internal courtyard, originally a convent of the Minim Fathers, which in addition to having permanently hosted orphan girls, was also the seat of the nursery and various schools . The Teatro Eschilo, owned by the municipality, is the oldest in the town of Gela in Sicily. Of nineteenth-century origin, the current building is the result of the renovation carried out in the last decade on the structure already remodeled in the first half of the twentieth century. Permanently closed in 1981, the theater reopened its doors on February 27, 2013. Source: wikipedia

City on the sea overlooking the Gulf of Gela. The plain develops around it and some hills rise. Pass by Piazza Umberto I to admire the Mother Church (church of Santa Maria Assunta)
