Best approached from the east by mountain bike so that you get a nice downhill to the ridgeway trail after the fort!

A quiet little area where Van dwellers are. they are peaceful and friendly. I sleep here at nights when in the area. Late night star gazing and early morning sunrises here are hard to beat.

The top section is great coming down after Fyfield Common, but the descent down into Avebury is tricky even on a mtb. Once you reach the farm it's been absolutely destroyed by 4x4s and tractors. So good luck. This type of track is my least favourite part of "official" cycling trails. They just whack the signage up and don't do any restoration or introduction of bylaws to prevent offroad vehicles from using them, restricting enjoyment for other users. It's not like there aren't miles and miles of offroad byways around here which could be legislated for multi-use and non-motorised use.

This is a particularly scenic stretch along the Ridgeway, an ancient road which runs through right through the North Wessex Downs Area of Natural Beauty. The Ridgeway is often deemed Britain's oldest road, having been used by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers to travel cross-country since prehistoric times.

Yes, the area is rich in historical and natural sites. You can encounter landmarks such as the extraordinary Avebury Stone Circle, Europe's largest artificial mound Silbury Hill, and the ancient West Kennet Long Barrow. Natural features include the rolling hills of the North Wessex Downs and seasonal streams that form the upper waters of the River Kennet. You might also spot the Cherhill White Horse carved into the hillside.
Absolutely. The Avebury Stone Circle – Avebury Stone Circle loop from Avebury Stone Circle is a popular moderate 16.0-mile route that passes directly by this historic Neolithic site, offering varied terrain including chalky sections. Another option is the Avebury Stone Circle – Avebury Stone Circle loop from Wroughton, a longer 29.7-mile ride that also takes you past the stone circle.
Yes, many trailheads and access points to The Ridgeway and other bridleways offer parking. For routes starting near specific attractions like Avebury Stone Circle or Barbury Castle, dedicated parking facilities are usually available. It's advisable to check specific route details for precise parking information.
While Winterbourne Bassett itself is a small village, public transport options may exist to nearby towns like Avebury or Swindon, which can serve as starting points for rides. From these locations, you can often connect to bridleways and byways that lead to the main mountain biking areas. However, direct public transport to all trailheads might be limited, so planning ahead is recommended.
Yes, many of the mountain bike routes in the area are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. Examples include the Ridgeway & St Alfred's Way loop from Beckhampton and the The Ridgeway at Barbury Castle – Manton Down loop from Hackpen White Horse. These circular routes are convenient for exploring the landscape without needing a return journey.
The area offers a mix of trails, and some sections of the wider, less technical tracks, particularly along The Ridgeway, can be suitable for families with older children or those comfortable with off-road cycling. However, some routes feature challenging gradients and technical sections, so it's important to check the difficulty rating and terrain description of individual routes to ensure they match your family's skill level.
Many bridleways and byways in Wiltshire, including those accessible from Winterbourne Bassett, are generally dog-friendly, provided dogs are kept under control, especially around livestock. Always be mindful of local signage and respect wildlife. It's a good idea to check specific trail regulations before heading out with your dog.
Yes, you'll find traditional pubs and cafes in nearby villages and towns, such as Avebury, which are often located conveniently close to popular trailheads or along routes. These establishments provide excellent opportunities for a break and refreshments during or after your ride.
Spring and summer generally offer the most pleasant conditions for mountain biking, with drier trails and warmer weather. However, the chalky tracks can become slippery after rain, so autumn and winter rides require more caution and appropriate gear. The open downland can also be exposed to winds, so checking the weather forecast is always recommended.
