Tried to ride this in late April (2025) and the water levels were so high that you couldn't access the bridleway to get through. We could see there was a bridge for the footpath in the middle of the lakes but this was well under water and tipped sideways! We had to go back on ourselves (approached from the North on the March line) and took Short Drove and Parkhall Road down to Somersham.

The pleasant Cambridgeshire village of Somersham has plenty of greenspaces to explore, including a nature reserve and Somersham Pocket Park. In the village, there are a number of shops, eateries and a pub. Somersham Local Nature Reserve has developed around the disused railway line from Cambridge to March and includes a lake and areas of woodland, grassland and wildflower meadows.

Absolutely. Many routes are designed as loops so you can start and end in the same place. For a moderately challenging circular route that avoids the most popular trails, consider the Three Pickerels Bridge loop from Mepal, which offers a pleasant walk through the fens.
Yes, the flat terrain makes the region very suitable for families. There are over 80 easy trails to choose from. A great option is exploring Bearts Farm Wood, a community woodland with easy paths where you might even spot some deer.

You can hike in the Fens year-round, but spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures and conditions. Summer is also lovely, though it can be very exposed on open paths. Winter walks can be crisp and beautiful, but be prepared for muddy conditions, especially after rain.
Sturdy, waterproof footwear is essential as paths can be muddy, especially outside of summer. Due to the exposed nature of the landscape, it's wise to bring layers, waterproofs, sun protection, and plenty of water, as weather can change quickly and there is often little shelter.
Yes, for those seeking a challenge, there are longer trails available. The Hiking loop from Chatteris is a difficult-rated route that covers over 22 kilometers, providing a full day of exploring the wider fenland area.
