The car park is free for National Trust members. I love climbing but I don't like heights....confusing I know! I really enjoyed this short climb but I found myself on a small scramble which got my blood pumping a little!

Cork Stone is one of several interesting standing stones on Stanton Moor. It is 5m tall piece of weathered sandstone located above the remnants of a quarry site. At some point hollowed out steps and metal rings were added to allow people (kids and their grownups!) to climb to the top

Thor's Cave is a limestone Karst cave accessible above the River Manifold. It's a popular destination but very much worth the detour if you're running in this area.

Try and get there as early as possible, especially if the weather is nice!

There is limited parking in the roadside, meaning you can have a short walk to the Cork Stone. This is a huge lump of gritstone that has stood for thousands of years. Wonder what they called it before corks were invented? There are metal handles which were added in the 19th century to help you climb up it if you fancy a challenge!

The region is rich in diverse natural features, including prominent geological formations, river valleys, and moorland areas. You'll find distinctive conical hills like Thorpe Cloud, ancient cave systems such as Thor's Cave, and impressive rock outcrops like Cork Stone.
Yes, several natural monuments are great for families. The Dovedale Stepping Stones and the River Dove offer a fun crossing and opportunities for exploration in a wildflower-rich grassland. Thor's Cave is also popular with families, though the path can be slippery in wet weather, requiring sturdy footwear.
For an easier experience, the path around Thorpe Cloud offers spectacular views without the steep climb to the summit. The walk along the River Dove, particularly around the Dovedale Stepping Stones, is also relatively gentle and scenic. For more options, explore the hiking guide for Eaton and Alsop CP.
Absolutely. The climb to the summit of Thorpe Cloud is short but steep, rewarding with beautiful 360-degree views. For those seeking more strenuous routes, the area offers difficult hikes like the 'Ilam & Dovedale loop from Alsop' or 'Milldale – Dove Holes Caves loop from Eaton and Alsop CP', which you can find in the hiking guide.
The spring and summer months offer the best weather for exploring, with wildflowers in bloom and generally drier conditions. However, popular spots like Dovedale can get extremely busy during school holidays and weekends. Visiting early on a midweek spring morning can provide a quieter, more serene experience. Be aware that paths can be muddy and slippery in rainy or snowy weather, especially near caves like Thor's Cave.
Many areas in the Peak District, including paths around natural monuments, are dog-friendly. However, always keep dogs on a lead, especially near livestock and to protect local wildlife. Be mindful that some areas, particularly popular ones, can be crowded, and ensure your dog is comfortable in such environments.
The region boasts abundant wildlife, particularly in areas like the internationally important ancient ash woodland and wildflower-rich grasslands around Dovedale Stepping Stones and the River Dove. Stanton Moor also supports a great deal of wildlife. Keep an eye out for various bird species, small mammals, and insects.
While popular spots can be busy, exploring areas slightly further from main car parks often leads to quieter experiences. Cork Stone on Stanton Moor, with its carved steps, is an impressive natural outcrop that can be less crowded than the most famous sites, especially if you visit outside peak times.
Beyond exploring the monuments themselves, the area is excellent for various outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, from moderate to difficult, including loops through Wolfscote Dale or Ilam. Cycling is also popular, with routes like the Tissington Trail. Discover more options in the hiking guide and cycling guide for Eaton and Alsop CP.
Given the varied terrain and unpredictable weather of the Peak District, sturdy footwear with good grip is essential, especially for rocky or potentially muddy paths. Layers of clothing are recommended, as conditions can change quickly. A waterproof jacket is always a good idea, and for exploring caves like Thor's Cave, a torch or headtorch can be very useful.
While some bus services operate in the wider Peak District, direct public transport to every natural monument can be limited. Planning your route in advance and checking local bus schedules is advisable. Many visitors opt to drive and use designated car parks, then explore on foot.
Visitors frequently praise the breathtaking views, particularly the 360-degree panoramas from summits like Thorpe Cloud and the expansive vistas from Stanton Moor Trig Point. The unique geological formations, the fun of crossing the Dovedale Stepping Stones, and the sense of adventure exploring caves like Thor's Cave are also highly appreciated.
