One of the many trails in the Peak District. You can cycle just this route, or join it up with others nearby.

Warslow is a quaint village nestled in the Peak District and the perfect place to begin numerous hikes. We started here to make our way to Revidge Trig point and soon passed through the village to be met with a vision of luscious green rolling hills adorned with buttercups, daisies and wild grasses. However, the route contained a multitude of stiles that were impassable for a large dog. So I wouldn't recommend this area if you are dog walking a large breed.

Revidge is a real hidden gem of the peaks. The summit offers beautiful 360 degree views of lush green countryside, rolling hills and moorland. We walked from Warslow, which was a beautiful walk, but is not suitable for large dog breeds due to the numerous stiles. However, Revidge can be accessed from other starting points which may be worth exploring if you are dog walking.

Absolutely loved this trig point. Spectacular views and a lovely walk from Warslow. One of the lesser known trigs and a real hidden gem. However, the walk from Warslow was not dog friendly due to multiple stiles. But, it can be accessed from other starting points which may be more suitable for large dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park for walks starting in Warslow?

There is limited on-street parking available in the village of Warslow, which can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. For a dedicated car park, consider starting your walk from Hulme End, which has a pay-and-display car park that serves as a good access point for trails into the Manifold Valley.

Are there any family-friendly or easy hikes in the area?

Yes, the area offers several easier walks suitable for families. A great option is the Ecton Bridge – Wetton Mill Café loop from Butterton. This gentle 4.7 km walk follows the River Manifold and is relatively flat, making it ideal for a shorter day out.

Can I bring my dog on hikes around Warslow and Elkstones?

Dogs are welcome on most public footpaths, but it's essential to keep them under close control, especially near livestock which is common in the fields around Warslow and Elkstones. During bird nesting season (typically March to July), dogs must be on a lead on open access land like the moorlands. The Manifold Valley is a popular area for dog walkers.

What are the best circular walks that start from Warslow?

Warslow is an excellent starting point for several circular hikes. For a route that combines valley scenery with a famous landmark, consider the View from above Thor's Cave – Thor's Cave loop from Warslow. This moderate trail offers fantastic views and takes you to the impressive natural cavern of Thor's Cave.

Are there any walks that feature waterfalls?

Yes, for a hike that includes picturesque waterfalls, head to Three Shires Head. This popular spot is where the counties of Staffordshire, Derbyshire, and Cheshire meet, and is known for its charming packhorse bridge and a series of small, cascading waterfalls. It's a rewarding destination for a moderate hike.

How do the moorland walks compare to the valley trails?

The terrain offers great variety. Valley trails, like those along the River Manifold, are generally gentler and follow riverside paths through limestone dales. In contrast, moorland walks, such as those around Revidge, offer a wilder experience with wide-open spaces and panoramic views. These higher routes can be more exposed to the elements.

What are some notable scenic viewpoints on hikes near Warslow?

The area is rich with stunning viewpoints. The summit of Ecton Hill provides expansive views across the landscape. For a truly dramatic perspective, the path above Thor's Cave offers a magnificent outlook over the Manifold Valley. The distinctive 'Dragon's Back' ridge of Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill also provides spectacular, memorable vistas for those undertaking the challenging ascent.

Are there any quieter, less-crowded hiking routes?

To escape the crowds, explore the moorland trails northwest of Warslow. The Revidge Trig Point loop from Warslow and Elkstones takes you through the quieter landscapes of Revidge and Swallow Moss. This area offers a sense of wildness and solitude, especially outside of peak season.

Can I get to the trails using public transport?

Public transport options to Warslow and Elkstones are limited due to their rural location. Bus services connect to nearby towns like Ashbourne and Leek, but they may be infrequent. It's recommended to check the latest timetables in advance. Many visitors find it more convenient to travel by car to access the trailheads.

What do other hikers enjoy most about the Warslow and Elkstones area?

The area is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.6 stars. Hikers frequently praise the variety of the landscape, from the peaceful limestone dales like Wolfscote Dale to the rugged gritstone ridges. The mix of well-known highlights like Thor's Cave and quieter, hidden paths is a major draw.

Are there any pubs on the walking routes for a mid-hike break?

Several routes pass through or near villages with traditional pubs. The village of Wetton, close to the Manifold Valley, has a pub that can be incorporated into a longer walk. Similarly, starting or finishing a hike in Warslow itself allows for a visit to a local pub for refreshments.
