Just a gorgeous view of the Malmesbury Abbey, you can imagine it, centuries ago, being a place so visible in the landscape with much fewer buildings!

This is a bit of a hidden gem. It's quite easy to miss it, yet it has a large indoor seating area as well as outside tables and chairs. Open 7 days a week. Big choice of snacks, cakes, and coffees. Recommended.

"Malmesbury (/ˈmɑː(l)mzbəri/) is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. As a market town it became prominent in the Middle Ages as a centre for learning focused on and around Malmesbury Abbey, the bulk of which forms a rare survival of the dissolution of the monasteries. Once the site of an Iron Age fort, in the early medieval period it became the site of a monastery famed for its learning and one of Alfred the Great's fortified burhs for defence against the Vikings. Æthelstan, the first king of all England, was buried in Malmesbury Abbey when he died in 939." Cit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malmesbury

Yes, many trails in the area are great for walking with dogs. You'll find numerous public footpaths crossing fields and woodlands where they can explore. However, be aware that you will likely cross fields with livestock, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead in these areas. Many local pubs, like The Spread Eagle and The Horse Guards in Brokenborough, are also dog-friendly, making for a perfect post-walk stop.
Brokenborough is a small village with limited dedicated parking for walkers. Most routes start from nearby Malmesbury, which has several pay-and-display car parks. For walks beginning in the village itself, on-street parking is available but can be scarce. Please park considerately, ensuring you do not block residents' access or narrow country lanes.
Absolutely. The region offers several gentle walks perfect for a family outing. A great option is the View of Malmesbury Abbey loop from Malmesbury. It's a relatively short and flat walk of about 2.4 miles (3.8 km) that provides lovely perspectives of the historic abbey without being too strenuous for little legs.
Reaching the trailheads by public transport can be challenging as Brokenborough itself has limited bus services. The most practical approach is to take a bus to the larger town of Malmesbury, which is better connected and serves as the starting point for many popular hikes in the region. From there, you can easily access the network of footpaths.
The area is well-regarded by the komoot community, with over 3,000 hikers having explored the trails. Reviewers often praise the quintessential English countryside scenery, including the peaceful riverside paths and walks through lush green meadows. The mix of woodland sections and open fields is also frequently mentioned as a highlight.

Many walks are designed to either start, finish, or pass near a traditional village pub. The villages of Brokenborough and Malmesbury have several options perfect for refreshments. For a route that takes you right past some local establishments, consider the Gorilla Mural, Brokenborough – Hotel Grange loop from Malmesbury, which offers opportunities to stop in both Brokenborough and Malmesbury.
The terrain is generally gentle, typical of the Wiltshire countryside. Expect rolling hills rather than steep climbs. Most routes follow well-defined public footpaths across agricultural land, through ancient woodlands like Angrove Wood, and along the banks of the River Avon. The paths can become muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended.
While most trails are easy to moderate, you can find more demanding options. For a longer walk that requires good fitness, the Angrove Wood loop from Malmesbury is a 7-mile (11.3 km) hike that takes around three hours. It combines open fields with a significant section through woodland, offering a more substantial challenge.
Yes, the region is rich in history. Many trails offer glimpses into the past, from views of the magnificent Malmesbury Abbey to paths that follow the course of the ancient Roman Fosse Way. The landscape itself, with features like the medieval ridge and furrow patterns in Cloatley Meadows, tells a story of centuries of farming.
