February 13, 2024, Chaine Memorial Tower

Affectionately known as ‘The Pencil’ The granite tower was built in 1887 as a memorial to James Chaine, the Harbour's developer. It's an accurate replica of an Irish Round Tower and was converted into a lighthouse by the Commissioners of Irish Lights in 1899. Has stood like a sentinel over the Lough ever since.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many running routes are available in Greenland?

Komoot features over 15 running routes across Greenland, offering a variety of experiences from moderate coastal paths to more challenging trails with significant elevation changes. These routes are designed to help you explore the region's unique Arctic landscapes.

Are there any easy jogging routes in Greenland suitable for beginners?

While many routes in Greenland feature moderate to difficult terrain due to the rugged landscape, there are options that offer a more gentle introduction to running in the Arctic. These typically involve less elevation gain and can be found along coastal plains or within settlements. It's always recommended to check the route details for specific difficulty levels.

What is the best time of year for jogging in Greenland?

The best time for running in Greenland is typically during the short summer months, from June to August. During this period, the weather is milder, the ice and snow have receded from many trails, and you can experience the phenomenon of the midnight sun. Outside of summer, conditions can be very challenging due to snow, ice, and extreme cold.

Are there any challenging long-distance running trails in Greenland?

Yes, Greenland offers several challenging running trails for experienced runners. These routes often feature significant elevation changes and cover longer distances, taking you through rugged terrain with breathtaking views of fjords and mountains. For example, some routes can extend over 20 kilometers with considerable climbs, providing a demanding but rewarding experience.

Can I find circular running routes in Greenland?

Many of the running routes in Greenland are designed as circular paths, allowing you to start and end your run at the same point. This is convenient for runners who prefer not to retrace their steps and want to experience varied scenery throughout their journey. Always check the route map on komoot to confirm if a trail is a loop.

What kind of scenery can I expect on Greenland's running trails?

Greenland's running trails offer incredibly diverse and dramatic scenery. You can expect panoramic views of majestic fjords, ice-capped mountains, vast open tundra, and the Arctic sea. Some routes might take you through rocky paths and coastal plains, providing a unique backdrop for your run.

What should I wear for summer running in Greenland?

Even in summer, Greenland's weather can be unpredictable. It's advisable to dress in layers, including a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a windproof and waterproof outer shell. Good quality trail running shoes with excellent grip are essential for navigating varied terrain. Don't forget a hat, gloves, and sunglasses, as conditions can change rapidly.

Are there running routes in Greenland that are suitable for families?

While many trails in Greenland are rugged, some shorter, less strenuous routes near settlements or along more accessible coastal areas can be suitable for families. These paths often have gentler inclines and provide opportunities to enjoy the unique Arctic environment together. Always check the route's difficulty and length to ensure it matches your family's capabilities.

What do other runners enjoy most about jogging in Greenland?

The komoot community highly rates the running experiences in Greenland, with an average score of 4.25 stars. Reviewers often praise the unparalleled natural beauty, the sense of wilderness, and the unique challenge of running in such a remote and spectacular Arctic environment. The panoramic views and the opportunity to connect with nature are frequently highlighted.

Is public transport available to reach running trailheads in Greenland?

Public transport in Greenland is limited, primarily relying on boats, ferries, and domestic flights between settlements. Within larger towns like Nuuk or Ilulissat, local buses might be available, but direct public transport to remote trailheads is generally not common. Access to many trails often requires private transport, taxis, or starting directly from a settlement.

Are there any specific attractions or points of interest along Greenland's running routes?

While the primary attraction of running in Greenland is the stunning natural landscape itself, many routes offer incredible viewpoints over fjords, glaciers, and the Arctic ocean. Depending on the region, you might encounter historical sites, traditional settlements, or opportunities to spot Arctic wildlife from a distance. The raw, untouched wilderness is the main highlight.

Are there any dog-friendly running trails in Greenland?

Many of Greenland's natural trails are suitable for running with dogs, provided they are well-behaved and kept under control, especially in areas where wildlife might be present. It's crucial to be aware of local regulations regarding dogs, particularly near protected areas or settlements. Always ensure your dog is equipped for the rugged terrain and Arctic conditions.
