Belvoir Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Belvoir Castle sits ontop of a hill rising over the valley of Belvoir, commanding views of North Leicestershire for many miles.

The house has been the ancestral home of the Dukes of Rutland with the family living at Belvoir for almost a thousand years. The land was a gift from William the Conqueror to one of his Normal barons who fought for him at the Battle of Hastings 1066. The house and gardens can be visited with a cafe to take a break.

Woolsthorpe Middle Lock

Highlight • Bridge

Woolsthorpe Lock, on the Grantham Canal, is a picturesque place to stop for a moment. Nestling among stunning countryside, it is a lovely spot to while away some time. If you fancy a drink, the Dirty Duck pub on the opposite bank has a large garden beside the water and also serves food.

A delightful coffee van parked in the visitor car park of Belvoir castle. Surrounded by wooden benches and with a stunning view across the vale of Belvoir its the perfect outdoors cafe stop. Despite being a van they have use of the Belvoir castle visitor toilets even when the castle is closed to the public. However, it is all outside so potentially less suitable for very bad weather days unless you wrap up warm in anticipation.
The staff are awesome! Friendly, chatty and enthusiastic, I visited alone but immediately felt like I had made some new friends.
The coffee is amazing. They serve a variety of coffees and have multiple dairy free milk options available at no extra cost. For cold drinks they serve the classic Belvoir sparkling beverages chilled fresh from the chiller. The food is equally delicious. A fresh daily selection of traybakes, cakes, and cookies, there's something for every taste including vegans! On this occasion, I went for the Bakewell tart and must say Bakewell has some competition here.
Before you visit do quickly check there Facebook page or website as they are not always at Belvoir castle. I have been informed that they intend to increase there opening days though.

Caffe Velo Verde

Highlight • Cafe

Fantastic cafe! 100% cycle friendly (aside from the gravel to wear down your cleats). Located on the same site as an eco centre with lots of outside seating. Plenty of space indoors too. Designated bike racks decorated with race numbers outside. Coffee enthusiasts paradise with many types to choose from including novelty beverages such as "espresso tonic". Cakes were divine with vegan and gluten free options. Also the breakfast sandwiches and paninis are meant to be pretty epic. Indoors has a large social table for large groups or smaller groups wanting to socialise with new people.

lovely canal bridge, head left along disused section of canal to pick up old railway line towards newark.

A great route but some sections are extremely muddy but great fun. Toft hill climb is one section that really works legs, slow and steady wins out

Regularly explore this end of the Vale of Belvoir lane network and stop at the 'Dirty Duck' pub for lunch. See the duck ornament on the roof and you will understand the name!

The disused Grantham Canal passes through the village and there is a large basin adjacent to the main road. This would have facilitated loading and mooring when the canal was in use. The basin now attracts a substantial population of swans and ducks.

You will find Woolsthorpe Lock on the end of the fabulously named Dirty Duck Lane. The bridge over the Grantham Canal provides a fantastic viewpoint to take in a rest from your ride, as does the nearby Rutland Arms pub on Woolsthorpe Wharf. There is a good quality gravel towpath alongside the canal.
