Northamptonshire's community cafe of the year! Freshly baked goods, decent coffee, and a lovely breakfast/lunch menu too. Little space to leave bikes out the front, however if you ask, they will direct you to their garden where they are (usually) happy for you to leave bikes!

King's Head pub also operates a tea room, with a good selection of coffee and cakes. You can also order from the breakfast and lunch pub menus. Beautiful garden right on the river, lovely stop on a bike ride.

The main starting point for many hikes is the Titchmarsh Nature Reserve car park (postcode NN14 3EE). It's a popular spot, so arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends. Some routes may start from nearby villages like Thrapston or Aldwincle, which offer their own local parking options.
Yes, Titchmarsh is generally a dog-friendly area and the nature reserve is popular with dog walkers. However, as it's a vital habitat for wildlife, including ground-nesting birds, you should keep your dog under close control and on a lead where required by local signage.
The terrain around Titchmarsh is mostly flat, making it great for families. For a shorter, manageable walk, consider the River Nene β Bench With View of the Lake loop from Titchmarsh. At around 3.4 miles (5.5 km), it's an easy route that offers lovely waterside scenery without being too strenuous for little legs.
Yes, most of the popular trails in the area are circular. This allows you to explore the lakes and River Nene without retracing your steps. A great moderate option is the Bench With View of the Lake β River Nene loop from Thrapston, which provides a comprehensive tour of the nature reserve's highlights.
Titchmarsh Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife, especially birds. The lakes attract overwintering species like goosanders, wigeons, and gadwalls. Along the River Nene, you might hear reed and sedge warblers. The area is also rich in insect life, with dragonflies and various butterfly species commonly seen along the footpaths.
There is a wide variety of trails to choose from, with over 150 routes mapped on komoot. These range from short, easy strolls around the lakes to more challenging, longer hikes that explore the wider Nene Valley.
The area is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.6 stars. Hikers often praise the peaceful waterside paths, the abundance of wildlife, and the well-maintained, flat trails that make it accessible for all skill levels.
While the immediate nature reserve is focused on conservation, several trails connect to nearby villages with pubs. The King's Head Tea Room β Wadenhoe Castle Close loop from Titchmarsh NR is a moderate hike that passes through Wadenhoe, offering opportunities for refreshments mid-walk.
Both offer excellent waterside walks in the Nene Valley. Titchmarsh Nature Reserve is often described as a more traditional and tranquil nature reserve focused on wildlife observation. Stanwick Lakes is a larger country park that combines nature trails with more family-oriented facilities like adventure playgrounds and a visitor centre.
Besides the main reserve, the region has several other highly-regarded walking spots.
Twywell Hills & Dales is a local favorite, known for its beautiful wildflower meadows and rolling terrain. For a different experience, Harlestone Firs Forest Walk offers numerous woodland trails that are perfect for exploring on a hot day.
Accessing the trailheads directly via public transport can be challenging. The nearest major town with bus and rail connections is Kettering. From there, you would likely need to use a local bus service with limited schedules or a taxi to reach Titchmarsh or Thrapston. Most visitors find it easiest to arrive by car.
While the main lake loops can be busy, you can often find quieter paths by exploring the trails that venture further along the River Nene. The River Nene β Bench With View of the Lake loop from Aldwincle starts from a slightly less common point and focuses more on the serene riverside sections of the Nene Way.
