Palencia's Calle Mayor is one of the city's longest and most emblematic streets, stretching over 900 meters. This pedestrian street is known for its arcades formed by 199 columns that flank one of its sides. Calle Mayor is Palencia's commercial center par excellence and is home to many of the city's most important civil monuments. It preserves the spirit and architecture of Palencia's 19th and 20th-century bourgeoisie, with stone buildings in the 19th-century and historicist styles. Some of the notable buildings on this street include the Casa de los Señores García Germán (House of the García Germán Family), the Colegio de Villandrando (Villandrando College), and the Audit Office of Castile and León.

Calle Mayor is the main artery of the city. With its more than 900 meters in length, it constitutes the backbone of the capital, the social network most visited by the people of Palencia and the location of a good part of the civil heritage that the city treasures. It preserves the spirit and architecture of the bourgeoisie of the 19th and 20th centuries and is supported on one of its sides thanks to the 199 columns that flank it. At its northern end is the Post and Telegraph building, built in 1916 by Jacobo Romero, who also planned the construction of the Catholic-Agrarian Federation, current headquarters of Unicaja Banco. Between both places, there is another interesting space whose façade demands our attention. It is the Convent of the Agustinas Canónigas, which today houses the offices of the city council.

In 1895, the young municipal architect Juan Agapito y Revilla drew up the plans for the projection of this central market. That same year, on September 4, the first stone was laid for works that still had to wait three more years before opening to the public. Its innovative architecture, inspired by the use of materials such as cast iron or glass, represented a true revolution for the physiognomy of a city like Palencia. This popular square, which has a total of seventy stalls, has a rectangular floor plan and is a perfect showcase to discover some of the most emblematic products of the area's gastronomy. On its exterior, several series of tiles stand out that represent the trades that historically met in the Plaza.
