Fiñana is a perfect base for hikers between the Sierra Nevada and Los Filabres, with easy access via the A-92 and the train station. In the upper town, you can walk along the Moorish route to the Alcazaba and the cistern, and visit the unique Almohad mosque converted into the Hermitage of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth, as well as the Church of the Annunciation. From the village, trails depart to the northern slopes of the Sierra Nevada and the Nacimiento River valley, with waterfalls and sweeping views. In summer, bring water and a hat; the steep slopes and streets require well-soled shoes.

In Abla there is a historical walking tour that passes all the sights and is well marked. We liked Abla better than the “magic village” of Abrucena.

Abrucena is one of the Pueblos Magicos in Spain. The village didn't seem particularly magical to us. After a short tour we continued to Abla.

Stop advertising the remote places, these people have taken a photo of me without permission and put it on the map, totally without authorization. Let's keep the mountains without tourists and weekenders. It is from the little that we have left... no more reviews or photos in the mountains.

This refuge has a spectacular location with unforgettable views. It has some bunks to put the sleeping bag and mat and it has a fireplace.

Abla is located at the foot of the Sierra de Baza and is one of those wonderful Andalusian towns perched on a hill with its winding streets and whitewashed houses.

The mountain bike trails around Abla are generally geared towards moderate to difficult skill levels, often involving significant elevation changes due to the region's mountainous terrain. While there are no routes specifically categorized as 'easy' in our guide, families with older, experienced riders might find some moderate trails suitable. Always check the route details for elevation and technical sections before heading out.
You can expect a diverse range of terrain, from the high mountains and verdant valleys of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park to the panoramic views and winding paths of the Sierra de los Filabres. The routes often feature varied elevations, including challenging ascents and descents, characteristic of a region nestled between two prominent mountain ranges.
Abla experiences snowy winters and hot summers. For mountain biking, the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) are generally ideal, offering more moderate temperatures and pleasant riding conditions. During these times, you can avoid the extreme heat of summer and the potential snow and colder conditions of winter in the higher elevations.
Yes, there are several circular mountain bike routes available. For example, the Transnevada and Encinar de Abrucena Loop is a difficult 41.5 km route, and the Abrucena – Abrucena Cemetery loop from Abrucena is another difficult 41.2 km option that takes you through the local countryside.
The region offers stunning natural beauty. Many trails provide panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada and Sierra de los Filabres. You might pass through charming settlements like Abrucena or the historic Abla Village itself. Some routes, like the Abrucena Holm Oak Forest Trail, lead through beautiful natural environments.
The mountain bike trails around Abla are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.8 stars from over 10 reviews. Riders often praise the varied terrain, the challenging nature of the routes, and the stunning natural landscapes of the Sierra Nevada and Sierra de los Filabres.
While many natural areas in Spain are dog-friendly, specific regulations can vary, especially within natural parks like the Sierra Nevada. It's always best to check local signage or park authority guidelines regarding dogs, particularly if they need to be on a leash or if there are restricted areas for wildlife protection. Generally, well-behaved dogs on a leash are often permitted on trails.
The duration of the trails varies depending on their length and difficulty. For instance, the moderate Abrucena Holm Oak Forest Trail (24.7 km) typically takes around 2 hours 42 minutes. Longer, more difficult routes like the Transnevada and Encinar de Abrucena Loop (41.5 km) can take approximately 4 hours 8 minutes.
While Abla is a recognized destination for mountain biking, the region offers a wide network of trails across the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and Sierra de los Filabres. To find potentially less crowded options, consider exploring some of the longer or more challenging routes, such as the Fiñana – Doctor's bivouac shelter loop from Fiñana, which is a difficult 65.1 km trail, as these tend to attract fewer riders than shorter, more accessible paths.
Given the varied terrain and potential for significant elevation changes, it's essential to be well-prepared. We recommend bringing plenty of water, energy snacks, a repair kit for your bike, appropriate protective gear (helmet, gloves), sun protection, and layers of clothing suitable for changing mountain weather. A reliable navigation device or app is also highly recommended.
While specific parking areas for each trail are not detailed, Abla and nearby villages like Abrucena often have public parking available. It's advisable to check the starting point of your chosen route on a map and look for nearby village parking or designated areas. Always park responsibly and ensure you are not obstructing local access or private property.
