... The value and significance of Marksburg lie primarily in its complete preservation as a medieval defensive structure. For many visitors, it is the epitome of a medieval castle. Its exposed location on a rock cone 90 meters above the town of Braubach contributes to this. The imposing fortress, with buildings mainly from the 13th to 15th centuries, is tiered with a keep, several buildings, baileys, and bastions. Particularly worth seeing are the typical interiors such as the castle kitchen, knight's hall, ladies' chamber, chapel, armoury, wine cellar, ramparts, and tower rooms. They provide insights into medieval life. A curiosity in the knight's hall is the so-called "Lüsterweibchen". It is a chandelier made of antlers, in the middle of which sits a half-figure of a woman. The Lords of Eppstein built the defensive structure starting in 1231 to protect the nearby silver mines. Marksburg was known as Burg Braubach until the 16th century. The castle changed owners several times as a Palatinate fief. With the extinction of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, Marksburg passed to the Hessian Landgraves. Later, the castle complex no longer met the elevated aristocratic living standards of modern times, so the residence Schloss Philippsburg was built in the valley. https://www.romantischer-rhein.de/a-marksburg
