Beautiful landscape, almost like on a model railway 😊

On the Lutternschen Egge, with its 263 m height, there is an old quarry that can be followed along large parts of its upper edge. There are no signs pointing there, but also no barriers anymore. Those who walk along the upper edge experience a phenomenal view towards the Stemweder Berg or the Rehburger Bergen and far beyond to the north. You can really see who will come over for coffee next week. 😉 Incidentally, a completely new dinosaur species was discovered in the quarry at our feet: the Wiehenvenator, excavated only in 1998. The original skeleton can be found in Münster today.

You share this singletrack with mountain bikers, or rather, as a pedestrian it's better to walk on the path directly along the edge of the quarry. This is easily done and the cyclists tend to use the hilly spoil heap.

The Oberlübber Bergsee, also known as the "Blue Lake," is picturesquely situated in the Wiehen Hills near Oberlübbe in the municipality of Hille. Formed from a former quarry, the quarry filled with groundwater and rainwater after mining ceased, creating a small but impressive body of water. With a length of approximately 167 meters, a width of up to 50 meters, and an area of around 0.8 hectares, it is considered the largest mountain lake in the Wiehen Hills and also one of the northernmost mountain lakes in Germany. The lake lies at an altitude of approximately 200 meters above sea level and is surrounded by steep rock faces and dense forest, giving it a tranquil and secluded atmosphere. The dramatic landscape, shaped by the industrial past of the quarry, contrasts strikingly with the natural regeneration by trees and vegetation. This contrast makes the Oberlübber Bergsee a fascinating subject for photography and a special place for quiet nature observation. However, the lake is not open to the public as the land is private. Steep cliffs and the great depth pose dangers, which is why activities such as swimming or picnicking on the shore are not recommended.
