The small chapel of Sogn Martin is one of the oldest sacred buildings in Brigels and presumably dates back to the early Middle Ages. The Romanesque tower is particularly striking, while a beautiful late Gothic wooden ceiling can be discovered inside. A special highlight is the Gothic winged altarpiece from 1518 with Saint Martin as the centerpiece. The wall paintings from 1515 also make the chapel particularly interesting from an art historical perspective. A small, but very worthwhile testament to the long history of Brigels.

The small chapel Sogn Giacun (St. Jakob) is located west of Brigels and was built in 1514. Particularly noteworthy are the intricate exterior paintings from 1515, attributed to the Soregno brothers. A small but historically significant structure and a beautiful testament to the long religious tradition of Brigels.

Slightly east of Brigels lies the small viewpoint Crest la Crusch / Escherstein. In a fenced garden stands a large granite block with an iron cross. The monument commemorates the construction of the first passable connecting road into the valley. It was erected out of gratitude for three men – Escher, Bavier, and Latour – who had particularly championed the road's construction. On the approximately 7.5 km long section of the panoramic road from Waltensburg to Brigels, more than 50 workers were employed at the time. In good weather, the Crest la Crusch offers a magnificent view over the Surselva. A small, but historically significant place, where a short break is worthwhile.

Brigels, in Romansh Breil, lies on a sunny terrace at around 1,300 m above sea level and, with its old houses around the parish church, has certainly retained its original village character. However, I also noticed today that Brigels is significantly more tourist-oriented than I had expected. Numerous holiday apartments, hotels, and tourist facilities are located around the village. As a result, the place sometimes seems less quiet and original than one might expect from a mountain village. Nevertheless, Brigels is beautifully situated in terms of landscape and offers a good starting point for hikes in the Surselva.

The Vorderrhein, as a young Rhine, is still a wild, impetuous mountain stream here and has the color of glacial water. Beautiful!

It is not open every day and the menu is small. But a refreshment is always worth it here!
