Climbing the Simancon from the west side was easy and quite fun. Same goes for the Reloj. Luckily we had a very clear day and could see all the way upto Mulhacen in the Sierra Nevada and parts of Africa. However, descending from the Simancon was not easy at all. It was difficult to find a specific route and one has to be very careful.

The Mirador de Levante is located at the top of the Sierra de Líjar, in Algodonales, Cádiz. This viewpoint offers stunning panoramic views of the natural surroundings, including the town of Zahara de la Sierra and its reservoir, the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, and Algodonales itself. What a great view - 360°! The path here is steep but well maintained! Unfortunately, you can only get to the summit with a (free) permit (approx. 20 people/day) - register in advance! - . From the north, El Torreon is a steep wall, from the southwest: a real mountain path! It's worth it!

An interesting ascent/descent to the summit, pathless with beautiful friction plates (if you can find them: occasionally small yellow arrows on the rock), but hands are not needed, if the visibility is good: fantastic!

The Torreón or del Pinar peak is the highest prominence in the entire province of Cádiz. From its 1654 meters high there is an incredible 360º view. At the foot are the Pinsapar, the Llanos de Rabel and the Green Throat. On the other side is the sea, where the Rock of Gibraltar and the African coast stand out. Other outstanding points are the summits of Simancón, del Reloj and San Cristóbal, the Zahara de la Sierra reservoir and the Sierra del Caíllo.

The summit of Simancón, at 1566 meters high, is one of the most sought after in the Grazalema mountain range. From here there is an unbeatable view of the Sierra del Pinar, which has its highest point at 1648 meters, on the Torreón peak. On very clear days you can see the Serranía de Ronda, the Sierra de las Nieves and Sierra Nevada, as well as the relief of North Africa.

The Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park has a unique microclimate. While it receives more rain than other parts of Andalusia, making it lush, it's advisable to avoid the hottest summer months for strenuous hikes. Spring and autumn generally offer more pleasant temperatures for exploring the peaks, though permits may be required for certain routes like El Torreón, which should be arranged in advance.
While some peaks are challenging, there are options for less experienced hikers or families. The Levante Viewpoint, Sierra de Líjar, offers stunning panoramic views of Zahara de la Sierra, its reservoir, and the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, and is generally more accessible. Some paths to summits like Las Grajas Summit are described as navigable without problems, making them suitable for intermediate hikers.
Beyond peak bagging, the area offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including moderate options like the Zahara Reservoir Trail or the Zahara de la Sierra Castle Loop. The region is also popular for cycling, with road cycling routes like the Puerto de las Palomas and Puerto del Boyar Loop, and MTB trails such as the Mountain biking loop in Sierra de Grazalema.
The park is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and unique features. You can explore the rare Pinsapar (fir forest) at the foot of El Torreón, the impressive Green Throat canyon, and the vast Llanos de Rabel. The region's mountains, lakes, and forests create a captivating environment, with many viewpoints offering expansive vistas of the natural surroundings.
Yes, for some of the more protected or popular peaks, permits may be required. For example, access to El Torreón Peak often requires a free permit, usually limited to a certain number of people per day. It's advisable to register in advance for such routes to ensure access.
Visitors consistently praise the incredible 360-degree panoramic views from the summits, often describing them as 'fantastic' and 'unbeatable'. The sense of achievement from reaching challenging peaks like El Torreón and Simancón, combined with the pristine nature and dramatic landscapes of the Sierra de Grazalema, are frequently highlighted as major draws. The picturesque setting of Zahara de la Sierra and its reservoir seen from above also leaves a lasting impression.
Absolutely. Many routes are designed to allow for combining peaks. For instance, Las Grajas Summit can be combined with its neighbor Tajo Algarín (Lagarín) Summit for a comprehensive tour. The proximity of various viewpoints and summits within the natural park makes it ideal for multi-peak excursions, offering diverse perspectives of the landscape.
Given the varied terrain and potential for challenging sections, sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential. Layers of clothing are recommended due to changing weather conditions, especially at higher altitudes. Always carry plenty of water, particularly during warmer months, as some routes can be demanding. Sun protection, a map or GPS device, and snacks are also advisable for a safe and enjoyable hike.
