The Puente de los Peligros, or Old Bridge, is a stone arch bridge over the Segura River. The bridge was completed in 1742. It is the oldest bridge still preserved in the city, hence the name Old Bridge, as opposed to the New or Iron Bridge which was built in 1903. The popular name of the Peligros Bridge comes from the presence next to it of a niche in which stands the image of a virgin, called the Peligros, who is deeply venerated in the city. On September 26, 1701, a flood of the Segura River destroyed the previous bridge (built in the 15th century) that connected the city to the right bank of the river and served as the beginning of the royal road to Cartagena. The Castillo de Guardamar is a historic fortification in the town of Guardamar del Segura. The castle was built by the Moors in the 12th century on a hill overlooking the coastline and the hinterland. It was strategically located to protect the region from possible attacks. The castle suffered severe damage in 1829 from an earthquake that destroyed much of the structure. Today only ruins remain, but these have been lovingly restored and are open to the public. Visitors can walk through the remains of the walls, enjoy the views of the surrounding valley and coast, and learn about the fortress's turbulent history. The hill on which the castle stands offers wonderful views over the region.
