Vogelsheim station was built in 1880 on the railway line from Colmar to Freiburg, which was inaugurated in 1878. Its architectural style is typical of train stations from the Wilhelminian era (1871 - 1918). In 1937, the station, under the local name of Burghoffen, served as a backdrop for Jean Renoir's film "La Grande Illusion" ("The Grand Illusion"). In 1991, another film, "Un Éte Alsacien" ("A Summer in Alsace"), was shot here. After its purchase and restoration by the municipality of Vogelsheim, the station has been the starting point of the historic steam train since May 1993.

The city is organized in a grid of 48 blocks. The Place d'Armes, located in the center, served as a training and parade ground for the military. The most important military buildings still stand today. The fountain served as a water reservoir in case of fire and as a watering place for horses. The four fountains at the four corners of the square supplied the inhabitants with drinking water.
