The weir was originally built as a defensive structure, allowing downstream areas to be flooded if necessary. Today, there's a pedestrian crossing over the Ill River on two levels: inside or on the roof. It's refreshingly cool inside in summer, and you can admire baroque stone figures in some niches. From the top, you'll enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Old Town. 👍

In Strasbourg, Vauban's colleague Jacques Tarade built the Barrage Vauban, also called the Grande écluse or Terrasse Vauban, from 1681 to 1688. The 120 m long lock bridge over the Ill flooded the upstream districts during the siege of the city in 1870 (Wikipedia). From there you have a beautiful view of the "Petite France" district.

The three bridges and four towers formed a defensive structure here in the 13th century which together with a city wall formed the protection for Strasbourgh. The bridges here were covered with a wooden roof until the 18th century. The towers were used as prisons until 1832.

In the event of defense, the canal passages for the area upstream were flooded using gates made of tree trunks. During peacetime the sliders were open to regular shipping traffic. There was no actual function as a lock. The builder of this obstacle was General Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban.
