A key site of the Aude resistance during the Second World War, the maquis of Trassanel lost 41 men, including the village mayor and the maquis leader Antoine Armagnac, during a hunt by the German army in early August 1944. During this tragedy, the resistance fighters found refuge in the cave among other places. A stele has been erected nearby.
