Sebastian
October 5, 2025, Château de Dachstein

Dachstein lies off the main roads in Alsace and is therefore less developed for tourism. The village nevertheless boasts some noteworthy buildings, such as: the medieval city gate, the Porte de la Bruche, the Church of St. Martin (Église Saint-Martin), which still retains Gothic elements, a nave, and a Baroque altar; the Renaissance castle (extended in the 19th century in the Neo-Renaissance style) of the de Turckheim family, the Château de Turckheim, or the Vieux Château. It was formerly a summer residence for some of the bishops of Strasbourg; the old washhouse, and the Château Hervé Bourcart, or "La Magnanerie." It is located closer to the village center and was built in 1750 as a private villa that housed the royal silkworm breeding school. It has been owned by the Hervé family since 1838. In the 1990s, the castle and its idyllic surroundings served as the setting for the film saga "The Alsatians." Magnan is an Occitan word meaning mulberry. The Magnanerie is the headquarters of a silkworm farm. The streets of Dachstein are lined with several traditional half-timbered houses, some with carved wooden galleries.

June 11, 2023, Fort de Mutzig

The Fort Mutzig, vmls. Position de Mutzig, (Eng.: Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II) is not only worth a visit, but one of many places in Alsace that bear witness to the eventful history of the region. Here you can find out in an impressive way what incredible resources were used for this, in this case with the construction of the largest fortification in the German Reich. From my point of view, this example of Franco-German history is therefore a "must-have-seen".

The Three Castles of Ribeauvillé and The Three Castles of Eguisheim also offer picturesque views from their elevated positions, showcasing the region's medieval past and natural beauty.

What is the best time of year to visit the castles in the Alsace region?

The spring and autumn months are generally ideal for visiting the castles. During these seasons, the weather is pleasant for exploring the outdoor grounds and hiking to castle ruins, and the natural scenery, especially the vineyards, is particularly beautiful. Summer can also be a good time, though it might be busier. Winter visits can offer a unique, quieter experience, especially for well-preserved castles, but some ruins or outdoor activities might be less accessible depending on snow conditions.

Can I visit castle ruins near Innenheim?

The Three Castles of Ribeauvillé (Château de Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg, and Haut-Ribeaupierre) and The Three Castles of Eguisheim (Weckmund, Wahlenbourg, and Dagsbourg) are also imposing ruins that offer a glimpse into the region's turbulent history and provide scenic hiking opportunities.

Are there any castles that are particularly accessible by car or public transport?

While many castles in Alsace are on hills, most have parking facilities nearby. For instance, Château de Fleckenstein is considered easily accessible with parking. For Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, there's usually ample parking, and it's also served by shuttle buses from nearby towns during peak season. For specific public transport options, it's best to check local transport schedules for each castle.

What makes Fort de Mutzig a unique historical site?

Fort de Mutzig, also known as Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II, is unique because it was the largest closed fortress in the German Reich at the outbreak of the First World War, with a circumference of six kilometers. Are dogs allowed at the castles or on nearby trails?

Many outdoor areas and hiking trails in the Alsace region are dog-friendly, especially those leading to castle ruins. However, specific rules for dogs inside castle grounds or buildings can vary. For example, while the park at Domaine de la Léonardsau might be accessible, it's always best to check the individual castle's policy before visiting. When hiking, ensure your dog is on a leash and you clean up after them.

How long should I plan for a visit to a castle near Innenheim?

The duration of a visit can vary significantly depending on the castle and your interest. For a comprehensive site like Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, you might want to allocate 2-3 hours to explore the grounds, interiors, and enjoy the views. For castle ruins like those of Ribeauvillé or Eguisheim, the visit might involve a hike, so plan for 2-4 hours including the walk. Smaller sites or those primarily viewed from the exterior, like Dachstein Castle, might only require an hour or two.

What are some lesser-known or 'hidden gem' castles in the area?

While not entirely 'hidden,' Hell-Oberkirch Castle offers intriguing ruins with a neo-Gothic chapel, providing a less crowded historical experience. The Domaine de la Léonardsau, with its abandoned castle and park, is another tranquil spot that offers a sense of discovery away from the main tourist routes.

Are there any castles that combine history with unique attractions?
