The shelter owes its name to the apparition of Our Lady in an oak tree around 1350. The likely origins of this place of worship are Celtic, and it was adapted to Christian doctrine by the first missionaries. The Gothic church was erected in 1518 in recognition of the miraculous healing of Count Reinhard of Zweibrücken.
