"Lafleur is the hero and main character of the Théâtre amiénois de Cabotins. In the nineteenth century, there were more than seventy puppet theaters in Amiens, many of which disappeared with the First World War and the invention of the cinematograph. This character experienced a renaissance and great success with local audiences from 1930 to 1960, thanks to the Théâtre des Amis de Lafleur and then the Théâtre de Chés Cabotans in Amiens. Lafleur is a puppet dressed in a velvet costume, often red, like eighteenth-century footmen, with a ruffled shirt, stockings, often striped red and white, and a tricorn hat. It is not known exactly when he appeared in the Amiens puppet theater, the oldest in the collection of the Musée de Picardie, dating from 1811. An article by Alfred Ansart presents a photograph of a Lafleur from the revolutionary period, with a terracotta face and blue, white, and red socks. We can compare his malice and his "fighting spirit" in the face of the uniform to those of the character embodied by Charlie Chaplin in the cinema. In addition to his language (Picardy), he is distinguished by his openness, his rebellious and mocking spirit, his arguments and his quirks (drinking, eating, and doing nothing), the reprimands regularly directed at him by his partner Sandrine, and his confrontations with the authorities, embodied by gendarmes, who are often mocked and whom he kicks with outstretched legs.
