Very nice dirt road with a very nice view of the Pin-Balma hills. Halfway, there is a nice climb of 11% for about fifty meters, it wakes up the calves and after that it goes on tarmac

Pierre Paul Riquet, Baron de Bonrepos, had always been fascinated by the idea of such a canal and devoted himself to intensive studies on the subject. He discovered that the canal's urgently needed water supply was to be found in the Montagne Noire. And he developed an almost complete model of the canal with all the necessary structures. In 1662 he presented his plans to the finance minister Colbert. But this was by no means enough to overcome all the hurdles. He had to do further persuasion. The costs had to be checked and distributed, and the ownership structure clarified. And then the time had come: in October 1666, King Louis XIV issued the decree on the construction of the "Canal Royal", which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the Canal du Midi.
