Basilica Notre-Dame, Geneva The Basilica Notre-Dame is a stop on the annual pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. After a turbulent history spanning centuries, it is now used for Catholic worship. Built between 1852 and 1857 on a former fortress bastion, the Basilica Notre-Dame is the most important Catholic building in Geneva. Located next to the Cornavin train station, it is a stop on pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela. After an anticlerical government came to power, the basilica was occupied in June 1875 and then closed. It was bought back by the Catholic Church in 1911. Built from molasse, a type of stone used in Geneva for the construction of many buildings, its architecture is reminiscent of the Gothic style of the 12th century. Perched at an altitude of 1,323 metres, the Col de la Faucille welcomes you with a 360-degree panorama of the Alps and the Valserine Valley. Whether you attack it from the north or the south, the spectacle is not long in coming. Its ascent from the south, on the road to Gex, has the appearance of a great Alpine pass with its many bends and countless views of the Mont-Blanc massif.

Located in the Grottes district, buildings with curved and colorful lines are a real curiosity. Built between 1982 and 1984 by Robert Frei, Christian Hunzicker and Georges Berthoud, they are inspired by the work of Gaudi. Their aesthetics earned them the nickname of Smurfs.
