History:
The church was finally completely rebuilt from 1839 in two successive campaigns. In 1839, with the help of a donation from a resident of the city, Marie-Jeanne Elisabeth Séau, a donation of 5,000 francs, the choir was first rebuilt and enlarged, as evidenced by the dating in glazed bricks. From 1843, the dilapidated condition of the ship's coal walls, and its cramped nature, led to various projects and specifications. An architect, unidentified, undoubtedly the departmental architect, was commissioned by the prefect in 1845-46 to propose plans and estimates. After a new donation of 3000 francs by Miss Séau, the ship was rebuilt from November 1847 at an estimated cost of 9443.92 francs. In October 1849, a committee was appointed to oversee the reconstruction of the ship, together with the architect. The work, led by entrepreneur Victorien Splingart, was completed in May 1850. The inauguration of the new building took place on September 24, 1850, probably after the installation of part of the monumental furniture. The cemetery, which was founded and enlarged at the same time in 1882, houses the (studied) grave of Marie-Jeanne Elisabeth Séau, placed symbolically in the axis of the west portal of the church. The tombs, which date from the 2nd half of the 19th and 20th centuries, bear the signature of the most important marble workers active in Thiérache. One of the funerary monuments, that of Lucie Applincourt, dates from 1890, has a cast iron base and cross supplied by the manufacturer and founder Alfred Corneau, from Charleville (Ardennes). Vigneux-Hocquet is dominated by the Saint-Martin church, this imposing building with a martial appearance protected the population during the 16th century. Today it has found a renovated interior and allows visitors to meditate, imagining the disorders of past centuries. The Tree of Jesse - in the form of a sculpted beam or "Poutre de Gloire" - is very rare in France! Restored, it shines and is worth a detour! (tourisme-thierache.fr)

Fortified church of jeantes

Highlight • Other

The fortified church of Jeantes is a historic monument located in the Aisne department, in the Hauts-de-France region. It dates from the 16th century and has a facade flanked by two square brick towers. The interior of the church is decorated with murals and frescoes created by the Dutch painter Charles Eyck in 1962, as well as remarkable stained glass windows. The paintings represent scenes from the gospel and landscapes of Thiérache, in a style close to expressionism and the work of Chagall, Picasso or Modigliani. The stained glass windows illustrate the life of Monique Carlin, founder of a religious congregation, and the four elements. The church has been listed as a historic monument since 1987.

December 16, 2025, Église Notre-Dame de Plomion

The faithful trust in the help of the Mother of God – who in France is always venerated under the title “Notre-Dame” (which corresponds to the German name “Our Lady”) – was expressed by the French nun, mystic and Doctor of the Church, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (religious name Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, 1873 to 1897) as follows: “In trials or difficulties I turn to Mother Mary, whose gaze alone is enough to dispel all fear.”

Beautiful fortified church that has survived several wars, even if it has a few bullet holes.

The fortified church of Plomion is one of the most remarkable in Thiérache. Completely renovated and freely accessible upstairs, since June 25, 2022, it was built in bricks and stands on the foundations of an old church, where a permanent garrison was stationed. This church is the "finished" type of fortress church which includes all the elements of fortification: tower, keep, turrets, watchtowers and a set of more than 60 loopholes including 42 on the keep! Numerous geometric patterns in vitrified bricks such as hearts and diamonds adorn the building.
