In the heart of the Vallée de la Mue, the first church in Thaon dates back to the 6th and 7th centuries. This Norman Romanesque building, from the 11th-12th centuries, is one of the first historical monuments classified in 1840. Take a look at its period modillions representing faces, its checkerboard decoration, and its Romanesque capitals.

As a memorial to the countless war dead, such a "Cimetiere militaire" - in German they are usually referred to as "war graves" or "soldiers' cemetery" - is still very important today. "Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said..." it says in the so-called "Hymn of Simeon" (Luke's Gospel, Chapter 2, Verse 29). However, the many people buried here did not depart in peace, but became victims of war and an inhuman tyranny. The most important and at the same time everlasting function of soldiers' cemeteries or cemeteries of honor or war graves is therefore to keep the memory of this suffering alive and to remind each generation anew (!) of the need to maintain lasting peace.

Unfortunately, the château was closed due to an event and could only be viewed from the outside. The park was freely accessible, but not particularly noteworthy.

This part of the beaches and Arromanche is truly magnificent, and the historical side of the landing adds to the charm of this small seaside resort. Frankly, from Ouistreham to Omaha Beach, I really enjoyed this gravel hike, which will remain etched in my memory. If you are in this area, on foot, by bike, I invite you to come and stroll around here.
