August 11, 2026, Dolmen La Pierre Levée

La Pierre Levée von Soubise (also called Pierre du Diable) is a dolmen on Rue du Dolmen near the D38 road between Brem-sur-Mer and Bretignolles-sur-Mer in the Vendée department in France. Until 2005 it lay on a large open grassland, then it was moved to the vicinity of the roundabout on the D38. The simple dolmen – dolmen is the generic term in France for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature) – with its 2.5 by 2.0 meter, 45 cm thick quartzite capstone resting on three supporting stones, lies on private land. Further stones lay scattered on the remains of the burial mound. The shape, unusual for France, with the capstone resting obliquely, is reminiscent of the Portal Tombs in the British Isles. In 1901, the remains of three corpses were found. The dolmen, around which several legends are told, is one of several erratic boulders, menhirs or stone tables named Pierre du Diable (e.g. in Allinges, Arq, Artas, Beuvry, Jambes, Haillot, Lécluse – also in plural as „Les Pierres“) in Belgium, France and Switzerland. Likewise, there are a number of dolmens in France called La Pierre Levée (see Dolmen de la Pierre Levée). https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Pierre_Lev%C3%A9e_von_Soubise

I didn't have time to go see the castle up close, but just for the view over the village from the bridge over the Ciboule, the Girouard is well worth a small detour.

August 6, 2025, Moulin Gueffard

The Gueffard Mill on Île d'Olonne is an old windmill dating back to at least the 17th century, mentioned in 1656 under the name "moulin du Bourg". It was a common mill belonging to the lord of the Court of Île d'Olonne, who earned an income from its operation. This mill operated until 1932, with a diameter of 5.4 meters and a height of over 7 meters, equipped with a system allowing its sails to be oriented according to the wind. After years of abandonment, it was purchased by the municipality in 2002, and an association began its restoration in 2016, including the consolidation of the foundations and the creation of a belvedere. The mill is an important historical symbol of the local heritage of Île d'Olonne.

It's like that in every town here. The World War II memorial stands next to the church, which usually has a colorful door.
