This tower constitutes an advanced defense for the castle of Pau. Built by Gaston Fébus below the castle, to the south, it serves to watch over the "Pau" river, the Pyrenees, and Spain in the distance. The tower was initially called the Tour du Moulin (Mill Tower), as a paddle wheel ensured the operation of a mill, powered by the small canal located at its feet. In 1554, Henri d’Albret turned it into a mint which operated until 1778, on the eve of the French Revolution. The mint was equipped with a hydraulic system during the reign of Henri II, King of Navarre, allowing for regular production thanks to the use of a balance press.

The current church is today rebuilt on the site of the old medieval castle of Andoins. From the 11th century, the lords of Andoins were important figures, members of the Cour Majour of the Viscount of Béarn. The castle was probably burned down as a result of a plot against Gaston Febus, Viscount of Béarn from 1343 to 1391, in which Baron Raymond d'Andoins participated.
