At the end of the Second World War, on May 3, 1945, Neustadt Bay became tragically known for one of the greatest maritime disasters: the sinking of the concentration camp prisoner ship Cap Arcona, which claimed 4,600 lives; the Thielbek, which carried 2,800 prisoners, almost all of whom perished; and the Deutschland, which also claimed many lives. Neustadt is home to a Cap Arcona Museum. Remains of the extensive chemical weapons and munitions sinkings from that period are still being recovered today.
