The origin of the Este Ducal Garden (formerly Public Gardens) can be traced back to 1598, the year Duke Cesare had a large uncultivated area north of the Castle enclosed with a hedge. The transformation into a garden was carried out in the following years following a typology common in Renaissance gardens. In 1634, the construction of the Vigarani small palace was also completed, a beautifully crafted building that preserves the classic characteristics of 17th-century architecture. Subsequently, after almost a century of neglect, under the court of Francesco III, the botanical garden was created, the internal structure of the park was restored until the substantial modifications that occurred in the mid-19th century, which have handed down to us a "mixed" garden area, with a zone of well-designed flowerbeds to maintain a formal connection with the various ducal buildings and the remaining wooded areas.

The Pieve di San Giovanni Battista, which is documented from 1163 and which tradition holds was founded by Matilde di Canossa, is a Romanesque church. It retains practically all its medieval features: the internal three-nave structure, the columns, the capitals, the crypt and, externally, the entrance portal, the two eyes with characteristic oblique mouldings, an archivolt with fine sculptures and some sections of the corbelled arcade frieze.

The Duomo of Modena, whose official name is Cattedrale Metropolitana di Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo e San Geminiano, is one of the greatest masterpieces of Romanesque style in Europe. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997 along with the Ghirlandina Tower and Piazza Grande, it represents the historical, religious, and cultural heart of the Emilian city.
